Hen needs crop surgery I cannot afford...what would you do?

Hello to all of you out there in chicken land. I haven't posted in a while because I have a 1 year old and no time, but I find myself in a situation where I'd like to hear from other chicken keepers. I only have two chicken friends to talk to IRL. This is a bit long...I've put a TLDR; at the...

    One eye closed?

Ok, great. I examined her again this morning and she is keeping the eye open normally. I checked all around the edges for debris but didn't see anything. I did not irrigate again because I don't like to handle her much before she lays her egg (she has an issue with thin shells), but I might do...

    One eye closed?

Thanks for your reply. I believe she does. Her pupil is reactive to light and when I waved my finger in front of that eye she blinked and moved her head.

    One eye closed?

Sorry in advance that I do not have pictures yet. I have an 11 month old, which should explain my lack of time... I have a 2 year old BSL hen that is keeping one eye closed. She free ranges in our fenced 1/2 yard all day. I feed Nutrena All Flock and provide fresh water at least daily. I...

Hen(s) moving eggs & how to stop them

I was completely at a loss for how the fake eggs kept ending up outside the nest boxes. I am trying to catch her on camera now lol!

Hen(s) moving eggs & how to stop them

Now that I look, the pic is a little deceiving. There are actually only 3 nest boxes, all with a lip of about 3 inches, although shavings tend to pile up in drifts in front of the boxes. I marked them here. Where the X is there is just a wall, but it does kind of look like an opening in this...

Hen(s) moving eggs & how to stop them

No curtains but the lighting in the coop is dim even during the day. I have a light in my coop that is on for 1hr at sunrise and sunset. I could have it stay on all day to lighten things up in there. Here's a pic of the interior. The window is on the right and there is also a pop door on that...

    Hawk coming to attack!!!

The string method does HELP. It isn't 100%, but I used fishing line on my run before I got the bird netting up and there were a ton of hawks migrating/watching, but no incursions.

    Hawk coming to attack!!!

It may not be what you want to hear, but if you free range your chickens for a long enough period of time, you will have losses. We literally had a honeymoon period of 2 years with our first flock free rangin before we lost one to a hawk. Don't get me wrong. I still let my girls free range a lot...

Hen(s) moving eggs & how to stop them

LOL, she is nuts! She is not the low bird. Out of 5 hens, she appears to have at least 2 birds below her in the order. I did just finish integrating (long process) 4 pullets (not laying yet), bringing the total flock to 9 birds. The younglings mostly keep to themselves so they are kind of like...

Hen(s) moving eggs & how to stop them

Nope. She does not seem to have any characteristics of broodiness. She just moves the eggs around, lays her egg, and leaves.

Hen(s) moving eggs & how to stop them

Hello everyone in chicken land! I have an Easter Egger pullet (~29 weeks old) that is giving me a little trouble. She likes to make a nest and lay her eggs on the floor of the coop. I've resolved this with other chickens in the past by covering their desired spots with flower pots/boards/etc...

    Help Chicken vomiting

Hi, I'm sorry about your hen. There are lots of experienced people here who will be along to help. In the meantime, post some more details and pictures if you can. Here are some things you might want to include: What kind of feed does your flock eat? What are their living conditions? Do they...

    Is it a respiratory infection?

I didn't either, and everyone I know who keeps chickens uses it. I don't think it is necessarily bad or anything, but it isn't a medicine which I think is implied by some folks. Good luck with them!

Chicken is inactive, sitting on the ground, doesn't eat.

That's a pretty big egg! Is she acting differently now?

    Is it a respiratory infection?

So sorry about your girl. I second this about VetRx. My poultry vet actually told me that it can improve symptoms like a breathing rattle, but any bacterial infection would remain without antibiotic treatment. Necropsy is a really good idea for birds that appear to have respiratory disease. It...

Week old chicks not responding to corid.

I do not advocate antibiotics without a diagnosis, but my vet had me give AmTyl (amoxicillin/tylosin - https://allbirdproducts.com/products/copy-of-doxy-tyl-powder-generic) to my chicks (6 weeks old) that had cocci. One of them had respiratory symptoms though. Here's a link to the cocci info on...

Week old chicks not responding to corid.

I'm so sorry @backyard pigeons. It is so tough having sick chicks :( Are there any other symptoms? I know cocci really taxes their systems and they can get secondary infections. I think respiratory and gut infections in particular, if I remember my vet correctly. Maybe someone else more...
