Ok I posted about these guys or girls a couple days ago and finally was able to snap a couple pictures, sorry they aren't the best of quality. They like to hide behind their mom whenever I get too close! These are about 6 weeks old and supposedly Americana mix bantams. They hatched out of...
I have a mixed batch of chicks that my broody hen hatched out. They are about 5 weeks old now and the standard chicks in the bunch are already recognizably male, but my bantams have no visible combs yet. Do they take longer to show comb/wattles or is it likely that they are pullets?
This chick is a mix of goodness knows what. I had to help him/her out of the egg after 24 hours of no progress and he/she is thriving! Looking like it's got a huge comb already though...you experts think rooster?
I'm finally letting my Cochin hen become a mother by placing some fertilized eggs under her from someone I found locally. Just a couple questions, but if you have any important advice I would love to hear it.
- How many eggs should I put under if I'd like 2-3 chicks?
- should I put the eggs...
My pullets just started laying eggs for about a week and a half ago and they are really small! About 60% the size of a normal egg from the store. Is this normal? Will they get bigger or do Cochins just lay smaller eggs?
She was on the move so I'm sorry that her head is all blurry, but I wanted to ask what color this Hatchery Quality Cochin is? She is definitely my favorite of the bunch!
I have 6 pullets that are about 7 weeks old and when I went to check on them the other evening they had put themselves to bed in their coop. This of course was when I still had the heat lamp on in the coop. Today I decided to take the heat lamp away because they are all feathered out now and...
My back porch where I walk outside to the coop is not covered so I cannot leave my shoes outside, especially in Washington where it rains 24/7. Not to mention that I use sand in my run so that sticks to my shoes as well. I was bringing my shoes in and placing them on the mat at the door, but am...
I have a few Standard Cochin chicks that I have to sell. They were ordered from Ideal hatchery and are doing great. They're almost completely feathered out now. I live in Battleground, WA. Please let me know if you're interested!
I've decided to keep more chickens then I had originally planned so I'm installing another roost bar in the coop. Unfortunately that leaves no room for the nesting box so I'm wondering if it will work out for me to put nesting boxes in the run or under their raised coop? The entire run is...
Of course I bought extra Cochins from Ideal after hearing all of the horror stories about all or some of them dying in shipment. The problem is none of them died and they are all so pretty and nice! Then chicken math kicked in and I picked up 3 Salmon Faverolles because they are supposed to...
We're finally expecting temps in the low 60's this Sunday and I'm dying to take my 3.5 week old chicks out in the run for a while and let them get some exercise! They have been outside in the coop for about 2 weeks now with a heat lamp so they are pretty feathered out already. Is that alright?
I'm thinking about fencing my side yard for the chickens to have some area to graze. The only plant I have over there is a climbing one like Clematis or Honeysuckle. I don't know what it is. I know I will have to put some kind of fencing around it to protect it, but I wanted to make sure its...
I'm going to have 4-5 chickens and my backyard is not fenced. They have a 6x12 pen with their coop inside that is off the ground so they have more square footage, but I really want to give them some yard to play in the grass and dirt. I was thinking of making a little moveable pen to put them...
After googling pictures of different color variations of Cochins and chicks I'm wondering if Ideal might have sent me a Mille Fleur chick? They don't sell them so I'm kind of stumped. Is that likely or is there something else that looks like that color? As you may have guessed I am a newbie...
I picked up 3 Salmon Faverolle chicks today at my local feed store that were some of the only survivors of a weak shipment of chicks they received last week. Two of the 3 are doing great, the last one had a pasty butt and when I went to clean it I discovered I was wiping away blood too :( it...
I'm thinking of adding a couple of 6 day old Salmon Faverolles to my 7 Cochin chicks that are almost 2 weeks old. Will they be ok or should I separate them? I decided I want to get a couple chickens that will be better layers since I've been hearing how bad Cochins are at laying eggs :(
I received 7 BR packing peanuts with my order from Ideal last week and they are all doing well except one is way smaller then the others. We're talking half the size of the other rooster chicks. Could this be a pullet or am I just having wishful thinking? It's eating well and acting normal...
I have 7 Cochin chicks that I bought with the intent of only keeping 3-4 for our backyard coop. My dilemma is that I cannot free range them because we live in a development and our yard is not fenced. There are also occasionally a few dogs that will wander into our yard My coop is 4x4 and the...
