My broody silkie hatched out her first baby today. There is one more egg. When she saw the baby she had no idea what do with it, but finally got it under her wing. She is in an elevated box in the main coop with her flock. Should I move her inside to a box with a light so when she gets off the...
I have one hen who likes to just chill in the nesting box, even when there are no eggs. Unfortunately, she takes LARGE poops in the box.
Eww. It soils the eggs and how do I get her to stop? (this is a new thing)
Yesterday I went out to see my silkies. One little black hen, Penny, had a vent with a ring of poop around it. Also the feathers by her vent were wet and smoothed back so her usually hidden vent was clearly visible. I cleaned her up and now she seems fine. Can anyone tell me what that was??
Our silkie hen had a mild case and we have been giving her vitamin E and selenium. Her symptoms disappeared in three days. Do we continue treatment or stop sooner. She is alone and not happy inside.
We have five silkies. Two are roos and three are hens. The one rooster is afraid of us, but always lets the hens eat first, go to sleep first, etc. The other rooster adores us, talks to us, lets us cuddle him, etc. But, when a hen gets in his way, he pecks them very hard and chases them. We...
A few days ago, my silkies began laying eggs. But not in the nesting boxes.
Those cute little eggs are sitting smack on the floor, surrounded by poo.
How do I get them to lay in the nesting boxes instead of the floor?
I have a silkie roo that only has four toes. He has been trying to make the move on the silkie hens who haven't even begun to lay yet! Luckily, the hens have been beating him up every time he tries. Is there any way I can get him to back off? We don't want any chicks from him, and we have a...
My family wants a herding dog to protect the chickens and horses, and border collies look like the best choice.
our only problem is finding a breeder. We live in upstate ny, capital region.
Does anyone have a reference?
My grey silkie roo is still kind of a baby, and he'll snuggle up with you if you pick him up.
But.........
When I put my hand in his box, he comes over and pecks me.
HARD.
What should I do to make him stop????
For a while now, my two silkie roos have been crowing in the morning. But today a shock came.
Gracie, the cute, feisty little hen, CROWED!!!!
I mean, it wasn't a good crow, but it was definitely a crow.
AHHHH!!!
We already have two roos in the batch of five chickadees. We cannot have another...
In september I purchased a batch of five silkie chicks, and two have turned out to be roosters. The problem is, they don't know how to crow right and keep competing for the food dish with their "crows". One's crowing sounds very high pitched, and the other's is much lower. The noise has gotten...
my one blue silkie is adorable, and we hope she is a girl, but she raises her hackles when we pick her up! does anyone know if this only happens with roos?
The problem, is winter is closing in, and we want our living room back!! we have 5 baby silkies, two roos and three hens, and we need to introduce them into a flock of RIRs, all hens. The girls have just begun to lay and are quite big. All the sites I have looked on have said that you should...
Has Anyone put in a raised floor in their outdoor run (attached to coop)? I am thinking of a solid wood floor with horse stall mats and shavings on top. It would be easy to clean and offer better protection from predators. The run is probably 10 x12 so it is a nice size.
today we took the new silkie chicks out and were sitting next to the little pen where the chicks were, when a unhealthy looking fox started to chase our rhode island reds. we grabbed the bb gun to scare it away, and it went after a specific chicken, ellie. Ellie ran and hid, while we chased the...
