Dying of old age, or something else?

I have a hen who is 10 years old. She was acting normal last week, but several days ago she started laying down a lot. In the past three days, she sleeps all day and doesn’t eat or drink. She will open her eyes a little if you move her, sometimes she opens her eyes and will drink some water if...

Pre-fab run or build from scratch?

I'm trying to figure out if it would be a better (cheaper, easier) option to buy a "chicken safe" that is around $1000-$1400 but comes with everything to assemble it, or to get these materials on my own. The thing is, it's a long term investment and I want to be able to assemble and dissemble it...

    Dried grass?

Since my chickens do not have access to fresh grass unless I cut it and bring it in, and since the grass currently abundant will be gone in the summer, I am wondering if there is a way to preserve it for later. How might I dry grass, or perhaps more importantly, would they even like dried grass?

    What is this bantam rooster?

Feed store said he was bantam ameraucana, and some of the other roosters that came in the same batch as him did look like that, but this one looks less so. Particularly, I don't know what kind of comb this is.

    Suddenly big watery poops everywhere

Yesterday I walked in and there was large, watery and white poops all over the ground. I saw several of my birds release some like that. Must it have been something I fed them? I couldn't imagine them all getting actually sick at once one day like that. I gave them some leftover scrambled eggs...

    Lethargic rooster

Yesterday I got a beautiful bantam Easter egger rooster from the feed store. He's hiding from the new chickens and afraid to eat, which is understandable when they're new, especially since he's so small and the others are big. I separated him to give him food and water. He's rather slow moving...

Hen goes from calmest chicken to most hyperactive

Maran used to be so calm just a couple weeks ago, she would sit in a box in our house with us for long periods of time and not try to get out. Now she runs everywhere and has escaped from the backyard about 5 times, running down the street and even across the street. Her general movements also...

Is this what a Black Copper Marans rooster is supposed to look like?

I saw an ad for this fellow on Craigslist, for $10. He looks like my hen, but when I search photos for roosters of this breed most of them look different, with more red and orange, and blue wing. Deal or no deal?

Is there a member's list somewhere?

I'd like to change my user name but I want to make sure it is not already taken or similar to someone else's.

    How the eggs have changed!

My black copper maran's egg has changed over the last few months. She laid her first egg sometime in late September, then stopped for a while since she's been sick. She started laying again a week ago and the eggs look so different! I know the color usually fades over the cycle, but this is an...

List of breeds with white earlobes?

I want to know if anyone has a list of all the chicken breeds with white earlobes.

Swollen face won't go away after a month

In about June she got the respiratory disease, we did Terramycin and it went away. It was only the breathing, no eye stuff. Then about a month and a half ago it came back with a swollen eye. We tried Terramycin powder again + eye ointment for almost two weeks but it didn't work. For a while I...

Welsummer egg or Black Copper Marans'?

I got a pretty new egg today! But I'm not sure which chicken laid it. My BCM has been acting like she was going to lay, for a week or two now, but I also have a Welsummer who is almost 2 months older than her and hadn't laid yet either. Her comb and wattles aren't nearly as big and red as the...

    EE Rooster?

So, I don't know what this rooster is, but he looks part Ameraucana. Beard and muffs, comb part pea but looks part straight. Yellow legs and extra toes. Red feathers and green tail. Type B body. Is this enough information to guess what the other half of him is? I'm wondering if he has the blue...

Silkie rooster helping his lady lay on her egg

Hannibal's been lonely ever since Priscilla started laying on that egg.... Jumping out of their section of the coop and getting into a bit of trouble with the big chickens! (They're both bantam.) Then I saw this cuteness happen:

    Black with orange chest

I don't know what kind of chicken this is. She is mostly black and has some orange feathers on her chest, a small single comb, orange eyes, lays medium brown eggs. Looks similar to this:

    Duckweed. Is it safe?

I've been thinking of cutting costs on feed. Currently I'm taking care of a coop of 23 chickens. They eat about 50 pounds a week, or $19. But I heard duckweed is healthy and can replace about 25% of their feed. However, I have also heard there might be contaminants such as heavy metals in...

    Broody hen -_-

We don't have a rooster, but Butterscotch is broody again (she was several months ago too). She will sit on the eggs 24/7 if I don't take her out and make her eat and drink. Even if there are no eggs she still sits there. When she does come out, she's all puffed up and constantly clucks angrily...

Changing location each cycle of egglaying?

First, Butterscotch my oldest hen would lay her eggs in a wooden box in the backyard. Speckles and Palila were still young and didn't lay yet. Then she stopped because she was molting. By the time the other two could, Butterscotch started again and all three would lay their eggs in one (new)...

    Red hen.. What breed?

I've always thought she was a rhode island red but when I saw pictures of them, they look a lot different. Sorry for the blurry pic, I don't have a better one right now.
