All my girls are laying now and steady through the winter... one started laying a rubbery egg and then some some thin cream colored shelled eggs. Now her eggs are slightly getting bigger and the shell is more hardy it's changes cream tones too. I make sure the feed has crush egg shells to beef...
All of my chickens are laying. Not every day... well two (RIR and barnyard mix I'm guessing). I have a white chicken that is laying a small egg and a few rubbery eggs. My newest layer is a Barred Rock mix and is laying a brown egg.
I didn't think they would lay during the winter. They stopped...
Waiting for an egg but....
My Sadie Hawk is mounting my RIR. My husband said she(he) got real nasty (pecking her head) and even crowed this afternoon. My husband is a city slicker (NY) so.... Could she be a he? Trans-tender chicken?
We just got our first egg EVER! Gretta van So-stern delivered today sometime and in the nesting box. I just knew she was close to laying because she would pop-a-squat and let me pet her.
My RIR Gretta Van So-stern is finishing up her 19th week (I think). I've put out a nesting box with two ceramic eggs just in case. I can remember (pre-chickens) when 20, 21, or 25 weeks sounded like a short amount of time. Now it seems like FOREVER while waiting for eggs.
I hear you! I'm nuts about chickens. It is my husband's fault. He bought a coop while I was out of town. After losing two chickens to a possum, he and I have built a new stronger coop and run. I'm buying two ( or three) more pullets to add to our lone survivor.
I can see it in people's eyes that...
We had a possum kill to of our girls. We have successfully killed one (emotionally charged due to the loss) and caught one in a live trap. Showed mercy and let him out far far away. We will continue to keep the trap set every night. We are going to build a new coop and inclosure.
Someone suggested blocking off the nesting boxes until they are closer to laying. Also, raise the roost above the nesting boxes (mine was the same level). Sadly a possum killed by ISA Brown and the Dominique last night.
I'm waiting and waiting for that first egg.
We live in the city and are only zoned for three chickens.
I, too, love taking care of them. One of my chickens (ISA Brown) should be laying soon.
Preach it! We just introduce two 12 wk olds (RIR, and Dominique). The ISA Brown still does not have a red comb and wattle. The Dominique has a very red comb and wattle but too young.
Hopefully you and me will not have to turn them into fryers... earn your keep ladies!
Still waiting for my ISA browns to lay eggs. I think they are now 24 wks. Trying to break them of sleeping in the nesting boxes. Their combs and wattles are a pink. One is turning a little red. Hopefully soon.
