Sorry you lost a couple of the chicks. They can be pretty sensitive the first couple of weeks, so I hope the rest are adjusting well to their new home. I'm planning to keep mine in a huge Rubbermaid tub with the brood light hanging over one end so the chicks can get closer to or farther away...

That's wonderful news! Can't wait to see the photos. Lots of cockerels- lol! Maybe post a flyer at the feed store and see if anyone else needs a roo. BTW, where are you? Ideal is in Texas and I'm wondering how far your shipment traveled. Mine will be coming to Massachusetts, but I'm hoping...

I was surprised to discover that some cochins are great broodies and others are not broody at all. I had a buff cochin bantam hen that would brood anything you put under her, but I have a big partridge cochin hen that has never gone broody in the four years I've had her. Cochins aren't great...

Keeping my fingers crossed for my May 8 Ideal hatch order. The last order I was from McMurray's, 25 chicks including redcaps, phoenix, cochin bantams and austrolorps. The shipment was 100% all alive and well, and didn't lose any birds. All of the chicks grew up and were healthy and no defects. I...

Good luck! I've been raising poultry since I was a kid, but every time I get new peeps, whether from a hatchery or an old broody, it's always exciting and an adventure. Hope it's the same for you!

If I got a call to say my order was shipping a week or more early, I'd be hustling to get the brooder set up! Maybe I'll do it tomorrow just in case. lol

Uh oh. My chick order's hatch date is May 8. I hope Ideal gets their act together by then.

Wow, that sounds terrible, Lorilyn Farms. I think I read that Ideal doesn't drop ship, and they raise their own stock. Could be there's too much in-breeding at least for some breeds, and that it has resulted in some bad genetic defects. Looks like I'll just have to wait and see what happens with...

When so many chicks die off like that, it could be because of temperature/heat issues in the brooder, moldy food (chick feed can turn really quickly!), or a viral or bacterial disease that sweeps through like wildfire. It doesn't sound like it had to do with their overall health at hatching or a...

Good to know that you're pleased with your shipments from Ideal. I'll post when my 30 peeps arrive in May.

Were the chicks healthy when they arrived? I have an order for 30 chicks from Ideal coming in the second week of May.

Has anyone bought Nankin bantams from Ideal? This thread is 100 pages already, so if anyone has posted photos of Ideal's Nankin stock, please let me know what page. I'm curious about what their Nankins look like.
