Farmhand, you may find that since the poopboards collect most of the poop, and it is so easy to scoop, every couple of days is worth while. The floor of your coop will stay much cleaner, and I do use the mix of sand, poop, and PDZ from the poopboards in my compost. All that said, here in Central...

I love how neat and clean new coops look. I think the downside to making the board narrow will be the tail feathers of larger birds. We moved the roost forward away from the wall because our rooster is much bigger than the hens and his lovely tail feathers were breaking from repeated contact...

I use a mix of sand and PDZ, and that works fine on the poopboards. The floor is DL. So this winter the flock somehow brought the sawdust/shavings up and mixed it with the sand and PDZ. I still can't figure out how they did that, but I just kept sifting, and it all works fine. Large pieces just...

When the material gets thin, as it is right now, I'll put this on my to do list, I drag the bag of sand out to the coop, and distribute it on the poop boards. Then I bring out sweet pdz in a bucket and sprinkle it around. Then I mix it with my cat box scooper. It might be 80% sand? There is...

Poop board convert *warning-graphic/gross poop pictures*

Mine is mixed with sand, and when I just renew it it might be two inches deep, or right now it is about half an inch. It works fine being a mixture, it still keeps the odor under control, flies away and I'd rather the poo get coated with a majority of sand at $5 a bag than 100% PDZ at $20 or...

I have been using a mixture for quite some time now 6-9 months, and I love it. It is cheaper tomixthem, and still no oders, flies are minimal. And on the floor I use deep litter, utilizing sawdust from my husbands carpentry business when they are using appropriate wood...free litter!

Whenever I try to design for some expected chicken behavior, they thwart me, and the outcome is not as I had planned. Now, I do NOT believe that they are smarter, I believe that they do not use logic, at least not as people do....

Love your coop, and I had to chuckle at why the carpenter gave up on chickens. My husband is very similar and also a carpenter, but the cleanliness and lack of odor and flies due to the poop boards and PDZ are making him more comfortable. I don't know what they use in Australia, but they may...

The perch/roost should be centered above the shelf, so 12inches from the wall if the shelf is 24 inches. So it can catch poop no matter which way they face...and from experience if the roost is too close to the wall, the wall can become, shall we say soiled?

I know what you mean about planning being difficult. On the idea of two levels, The top level would be pooping on the bottom level, so everyone would want to be on top. My coop is 6 by 8, and I put a poop board on a short side. It works well, but the girls don't always get on well, so soon...

Poop board convert *warning-graphic/gross poop pictures*

I've been using sand and PDZ on the poop boards, not super thick, and it's fine. Mine doesn't seem real dusty, and it's mostly sand with a minimum of PDZ, it scoops quick, and lots sticks to the poop, so I feel better about composting the cheap sand than the precious PDZ. Right now My floor is...

Love your grass and puffy clouds, it should make your flock feel very peaceful. Do the babies get cartoons? Tweety bird and foghorn Leghorn, maybe?

My wonderful, patient, long suffering husband just remodeled the coop using the shelf style poop boards. After one night, I am a convert. It was really easy to clean, and there is so much more room. I won't have to scrub the walls as often, and my new chicks and their broody adoptive mom can fit...

Love your coop and the roost and poop tray with the magic powder! Am using a ladder type roost with hinges and boot trays underneath, but this looks even better, and would save space. Also, the top rung, the favorite, in my coop is too close to the wall and there are distressing soil...
