My daughter moved to Falcon area about 1.5 years. We all love it. I actually live about 5 miles into the trees of Black Forest. we now wish we had more land. 3 acres is just not enough :) we love homsteading and of course our chickens. Who knows she may end up farther out east some day. i bet...
Well, I had my second carpel tunnel surgery yesterday but before that was done, I had to complete one more chicken project.
It's a large feeder for the bus. Supposed to hold 300+ lbs of feed. It only took 2.5 hours to build. Found a video on YouTube with all the plans on Google doc. They were...
I would recommend getting a seedling heating pad. It will warm for fermenting. I worry that the aquarium heaters will be too hot. I use one to heat our waterers and I set it down on the bedding for a minute the other day and it burned the material. If it says heat the water to 62 the element...
This is late... But welcome. I'm nearby in Falcon. You'll love this group. They've been so knowledgeable and helpful. We only began our journey in late January 2015 with 9 hens. Decided to add over 100 pullets in July. So, we have learned very quickly.
Any thoughts?
I am considering removing all the bedding underneath the roost bars of our bus coop. This will leave about 2/3 of the bus with bedding. The reason I want to do this is then I can remove all poop under roost bars every few days or daily when my schedule allows it. I like the idea...
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. So, it's sounds like you increase the protein of standard feed to accommodate all the different varieties. I too have a bit more time to care for chickens. Thanks again.
We use a bus for a coop. The ramp is rather long and somewhat steep. The opening is large enough I believe for the turkeys to come and go but can they get up the ramp. Will they roost in the coop - from your experience? I have read that turkeys like to roost outside in good weather. Should I...
When we adopted our chickens last year, a couple had suffered frostbite from the December deep freeze. They were really dark, looked black to me. No tips lost. It just seemed to take time to heal. Great pics!
One more coop hack... Coop ventilation
I bought a set of 4 furnace filters for $4 @ home depot. I opened the window and screwed a set of two to each window. Test drove two windows worked great. I did 4 more. 100+ chickens create a lot of moisture in the coop. I use a similar method in our little...
Here's a bit more of our bus set up. It's definitely a work on progress. Oh, the biggest challenge with 100+ chickens is what to do with all the manure and how to keep the coop clean. We now have a local farmer come and clean out all the bedding once a month and haul the manure away (he has 500...
We use a 5 gallon bucket with poultry cups and an aquarium heater. I just wipe the little bit of frozen water out of the cups in the morning. I have it on a thermocube that turns on at 35.
We have over one hundred chickens in the bus with a very large run. We have a total of over 30 nest boxes we can phase in. As they begin to lay we wanted to train them on proper use of a nest box . So for now only the top boxes are open. We are getting about 2 dozen eggs a day at this point...
Yesterday, Nest boxes in the bus coop.
Curtains today. Little by little it's coming together.
Our chicks hatched the third week I July started laying the say after Thanksgiving. Yay!
We have had an extra exciting Thanksgiving. First I would like to say, I am not super active on this thread but I am always learning from your posts and you are all there for me when I have some weird challenge - so one of the many things I am thankful for. Why our Thanksgiving weekend is so...
