Ok I have my final results.
I set 36 eggs, 19 hatched and in the brooder doing great, 3 apparently weren't fertile.
3 died after pipping, but never got out of the shell.
2 had very minimal development (probably quit developing after the first few days in the bator).
4 Developed a lot...
15 hatched and are fine and healthy. 5 pipped, but didn't make it out. Not seeing any movement for the last 12 hours from the last 16. Some of them (maybe all) might not have been fertile.
Not as many as I was hoping for, but way better than I was expecting for my first hatch.
Well, this morning is day 18 so went to remove the turner and lock it down, and 4 of the eggs were already pipped.
Impatient little suckers.
A few hours later, and now 6 of the original 36 are pipped. And there is a good bit of cheeping going on.
Going to be fun times around here in a...
Ok, on day 9. I fashioned together a homemade candler and it seems to work ok on these brown eggs. Not sure 100% of what I am looking for, but I was able to see (and draw) the air cells. I also weighed the eggs, which I also weighed on the day I collected them, but failed to do so right...
Day 6 - Eggs are still in the bator.
Kinda like watching paint dry. Well, at least I have stuff to do to keep me busy. I have to finish the new brooder in the new coop area, and I need to clean/refresh the bedding in the other coops. Plus re-do some wiring in the barn..
And try to...
As of this evening I have collected 32 eggs for the incubator. Tomorrow will be my 10th day of collecting eggs, so should end up with 36-ish. My original plan was to slap them in the incubator Wednesday morning, but I am getting anxious so might do that tomorrow night.
Got the old horse...
The ducks are doing ok. I was collecting 4 eggs a day, but now down to 2 (one went broody). Out of the 10 ducks she has, 5 are males. I've talked her into letting me do another hatch and her getting rid of the 4 extra males so she can try to keep 10 ducks but only have one male.
The RIR's I...
Ok, I am looking to put the eggs in the incubator Wed morning (10/28). So far I have collected 21 eggs, and am on track to be loading in 35 to 40 eggs at that time.
I got the incubator from my sister. It's nearly brand new and a Hovabator 1588, and that makes me happy after reading up on...
I started collecting eggs Sunday for the incubator. This will be my first time doing this. I am hoping to set them in the incubator this Sunday (10/25/15) which means a mid-November hatch.
The hens I am collecting from are all RIR's except for one Chocolate Orphington. I get about 4 eggs a...
