    Bresse Chickens

We processed 27 birds and most of them were Pita Pinta mixes. We did mark the 2 Bresse and 2 of the Pita Pintas for a taste comparison. Each family has 1 of each and we plan on cooking the 2 at the same time/same manner. How do you recommend that we cook them? My DH is voting for the...

He was the wider of the 2 but shorter. He was showing lots of raging hormone behavior so maybe that was what most of the food he ate was fueling. The younger one would probably have filled out more if he had another 4 weeks to grow. I had 3 cockerels and opted to keep only 1. It was a hard...

    Bresse Chickens

We just processed 2 Bresse cockerels on Sat. 1 was 24 weeks and the other was 20 weeks. Both weighed 4.2 lb processed.

    Bresse Chickens

They do like to roam! I had my breeding flock at a friend's 10 acre farm. We had covered pens that opened into a large fenced area that we let them forage in when they weren't separated for breeding. The forage area was not fenced and the Bresse were constantly escaping. The farm is at the...

Sorry but I can't help you with that question. I only have white Bresse. The chicks in my pic aren't all Bresse. The blue chicks are Pita Pinta/Splash Langshan mix and the one red chick is a Rhode Island Red. I hope someone else has an answer for you.

    I agree with this.

Can you post some pics of them? I have been able to sex mine easily by 10 weeks. The pullets do have bigger, redder combs than my other breeds at that age but the cockerels combs are easily twice the size.

    Bresse Chickens

We will be processing our first one on Sat and I have lots of chicks of various ages. Ron says that they are better tasting than Bresse and I've been impressed with their growth rate. They aren't anywhere near the size of my Langshans but they are a little bigger than my Bresse. They start...

    Bresse Chickens

We are to the point of getting rid of our Bresse flock. We started off with a trio that was close to POL. They lived at my friend's 10 acre farm and her kids took care of the feeding, watering, and egg collecting. Chauvelin started to get aggressive and go for her 11 yr old son when he went...

    Bresse Chickens

I started with a Bresse trio and one of the pullets laid a very lightly tinted egg. I hatched chicks from both pullets and now their daughters are laying eggs. All of the eggs laid by the second generation are darker than the first generation light colored egg. I've heard from other breeders...

I can sex mine by 6 weeks but it is easier to tell if you have several of them to compare. The boys and their combs stand out from the girls. Here is a pic of two cockerels with their adoptive broody mama. They are around 8 weeks old in this pic. In this pic you can see a pullet at...

    Bresse Chickens

My Bresse are at a friend's farm and are housed right now with two pairs of Rhode Island Reds. There is no doubt whose chicks are whose. The Bresse don't allow the RIRs to get their girls and the RIRs protect their girls. It's kind of funny! We are not hatching or selling fertile eggs from...

    Bresse Chickens

My Bresse trio came from chicken tows! She has beautiful, healthy birds and my 3 produced many fat little chicks over the past year. We have replaced the cockerel with 2 of his sons and are in the process of narrowing down our pullets to around 8 of the biggest and best. We also have quite a...

    Bresse Chickens

We started off with a trio. One pullet laid light brown eggs and the other pullet laid cream colored eggs. It will be interesting to see what color all of their daughters lay. We have a few of them at POL and all the pullet eggs have been light brown.

    Bresse Chickens

I haven't had any feathered legs hatch from my birds and they came from the same breeder that chiqitas came from (originally from Greenfire, of course). In the last hatch, though, I had 2 cockerels that have the strangest combs. The back of the comb is very thick. Here is a pic of one of them.

    Bresse Chickens

One of my 2 hens lays a white egg and the other lays a light brown egg. I have been separating them before they hatch in the incubator and banding the chicks so I know which hen they are from.

    Bresse Chickens

Last spring, I purchased a young Bresse trio for $100. That was more than I have ever spent on chickens but it was worth the money. The girls are great egg layers and the fertility has been fantastic. My grow out pens are filled with young birds and we will be processing the extra roos in a...

    Bresse Chickens

That's a good question that I have been thinking about, too. The main thing that I am planning on breeding towards is body conformation and size. That seems to be the number one breeding priority for most breeds. My current roo is not small but he is not big either. Some of his sons are...

    Bresse Chickens

The friend of mine who owns the farm where my breeders live had hoped to not buy meaties this year but we didn't get our breeding pens built in time. Plus, we only have a trio of adult Bresse so egg numbers were limited. So she ordered 2 groups of 50 Cornish X chicks. Due to the timing of...
