Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

Heather, I have had that exact smell with both my hatches from about the time of first pip until after I cleared the eggs out. I thought it was just me. I haven't had any issues with rotten eggs or anything else. It may just be the normal smell from the higher humidity combined with the...

Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

I have one that is that way also. He also has curled toes. I'm trying to decide whether to try to straighten the toes or cull. I don't want to but the last hatch I had a silkie that also had these same symptoms. I tried taping toes and pampering (honey and apple cider vinegar water really...

Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

I have 4 out, 1 zipping, and several pipping. My temps read 100 the whole hatch but must have been a bit high because they are all hatching early and still attached to egg. They are also taking much longer from pip to hatch than my other hatch. We'll see how the rest of the hatch goes.

Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

I have 5 pips. Looks like one is going to die. It pipped from the small end and is oozing yolk. I'm not sure how well any of them are going to do as hatch day should be Monday. However with eggs shipped in this heat and stored in this heat may have started incubating before actual date in...

Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

The "tufting" gene is a lethal gene. If both parents contribute and the chick gets a double dose then it will die late in hatch. Info I read on the breed says around day 18. Odd that SOP requires a lethal gene to be perpetuated, isn't it? I'm sorry. I don't remember where exactly I read...

Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

I'll be interested to see if this works. I am only on my second hatch and this one has shipped eggs. So far I have discarded 5 out of 25. 4 clears and 1 blood ring However, I am hatching Araucanas so I know I will lose some at lockdown due to lethal gene. We'll just have to wait and see. I...

Good luck. Hope that works for you. Are you going to keep yours in egg cartons to keep the large end up or lay them flat?

Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

Welcome. I've been trying to get my husband to let me have some heritage (self-fertilizing) turkeys but no luck yet. Hope you have a good hatch. I took out 4 of my 25 last night since they were obviously no good. I probably won't candle again unless I notice something obviously wrong. I'm...

Annmarie, I completely understand. Luckily I live close to Danville and have every intention of heading down one of these days to see Lucky Pickens and get some of her heritage birds. We are also very fortunate in this area that a professor at the University of Arkansas research farm...

You are supposed to open all the vents upon lockdown. The humidity and heat will go up when your chicks start hatching. If it gets too high, just turn your thermostat down slightly. I had 48 eggs in the LG last time. It never got hot enough that it was anything to be concerned with. If you...

Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

Looks like out of my 25, I have two blood rings and 2 clears, but I am not an expert I will wait and see. I am absolutely thrilled with the results of the 16 shipped eggs only having 1 blood ring so far and 2 clears. I may have more quitters later on. My rooster must be doing his job because...

Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

X2 I won't remove any of mine that I feel questionable about until close to lockdown unless I see a real reason to remove it. Some of the newer incubators are actually set with a cool down time to mimic the hen getting off the nest so a few minutes open won't hurt.

Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

The pullets feather out light brown and the cockerels are black. This is my first hatch. I'm hoping that I have some darker pullets because otherwise I have 4 cockerels and only one pullet. Fingers crossed that I have 3 darker pullets. I just candled my 25 eggs. Looks like of the 16...

Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

Nice! Don't forget the hatch hasn't occurred until you post pictures, says the person who couldn't post pictures last hatch. I have SQ SF's from my last hatch which are absolutely beautiful, but I am afraid out of the 4 I kept that I have 3 roos and 1 pullet. I'm hoping that I can arrange...

Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

ChicksinPR, I would bet that your big problem was the 109 degrees in the first week. I have read that they are very vulnerable to spikes in temp the first week. Going low is much better than going high. The best way to see if humidity is too high is to check your air cell during candling...

Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

I am running with basically dry hatch and trying to maintain between 30 and 40% humidity. I would be afraid that 60% and 80% would be too high, but I am NOT an expert. Around here the humidity is normally high enough that we don't need any extra. That is the South for you.

We don't have any livestock right now. Have had horses and feeder calves. Sounds like you will have a beautiful hatch of Dorkings from that color mix. Can't wait to see pictures.

Can you take the lid off and use a paper towel to remove some of the water from the wells?

You are lucky if you have any hay. We are pretty well burned up around here. Unless we get some late rain most of the farmers are going to have to work with only one cutting this year. Not good after a short year last year also.
