I've only had one go broody but she was not very protective until the chicks hatched!
On another topic... I have a hen that will be five years old this coming spring... still a good layer. I've been culling hard so most so have not made the cut and not had the chance to live here that long...
My youngest are laying very small eggs. I have one hen that's 4 years old and hers are large. I think they are darker in color too but that might be my imagination!
I'd like to share some photos. All comments are welcomed and appreciated.
This photo is the 4 year old hen on the right...
It is a terrible picture. I mean the little one directly in front of the roo... first one on the left. Behind him is a pullet of the same age... he's slightly more than half all 5 pullets in size. He seems to be pretty nice, except for the size. I've just never had a cockerel that much smaller...
Is this little cock a runt or a bantam? They came from Sand Hill and I wrote and asked them if a bantam might have gotten in the mix... I think they might have Dom bantams... but have not heard back so thought I'd ask here. If he's a bantam I'll try to re-home him as such. The picture is poor but...
Baby pictures! Don't you just hate it! This broody Silkie thinks these are her babies... she's a good mom.
They are in the pen with these guys and the Dom rooster looks after them too! If they stray he sends them back to Silkie Mom.
The head spots are indicators in some strains... works for mine but I can't tell from these pictures.
The male head spot is usually larger and more scattered than the one on the female. The female's tends to be small and more compact.
Mine are 2nd and 3rd generation mixed hatchery... now a closed flock. It's kind of fun. I did get eggs from NYred... presently in the incubator. If I get a successful hatch, I'll establish another small breeding flock... I have had bad luck with shipped eggs in the past.
Great! with those numbers are you seeing lots of "improvement"? My numbers run smaller 30-40 at hatch and 10-12 for over winter . Only 3-4 are bred and the rest are laying hens. Small time operation.
I did P.M. for some eggs and just wanted to say I think you'll be missed in the Dom breeding world. You have/had? lovely birds. I hope you'll still be on the thread I've gotten lots of sound advice from you.
Bramble and his girls. He is so protective of his flock that you have to laugh! If he images danger he calls them all back inside the run and he stands guard at the open gate.
All my Dom eggs are beige brown. They vary in how dark they are. The red brown would be pretty. I wonder if it has something to do with feed? Good luck with your hatch! I only want to hatch eggs from 2 of my hens so when it warms up I'm going to do some creative rearranging.
I got a laugh over my Dom rooster, recently. I thought I'd let the Spitzs and Doms out together a while ago. (And watch to see if they got along.) Their runs are next to each other and they share the house with a wire separator...so... The Spitzes ran all over, as usual, but the Dom rooster...
