    Deep litter method

I've wanted chickens for a while, but I did not look forward to the smell or poop management. The DL makes having chickens so much easier, it's almost effortless!

    Deep litter method

I've been using DL for 1 1/2 yrs now, and I truly love how easy it is. I know mine isn't perfect, it tends to be more on the dry side, but there is never any smell. This morning I added some loads of leaves/pine straw to my 3 pens. I love the way the leaves/pine straw makes the coops smell...

What kind of lime will you be adding, sweet lime? We used to put lime in our horse stalls, but had to make sure it was all covered so that it wouldn't burn their hooves. I'm assuming it was the caustic lime, this was years ago. What trouble did you have in your garden? I have some deep litter...

I converted two of my stalls into an open air coop. It's 10x20. I'm in the process of adding an outside run to the coop, but that is taking it's own sweet time. Click on the "my coop" under my avatar for more info on my coop building. I'm using deep...

From what I've read, if I have understood it right, you can use it in your run. I plan to. Too me, nothing much worse than the slimy, stinky stuff that usually develops in a chicken pen. Unless it's cat poop.

I've cleaned my brooder out twice so far. A week after I got them and realized it really didn't need cleaning. :( . Then a week or so ago when I moved them to my coop brooder. I just dumped the shavings in the coop. I've also been raking up leaves and going ahead and putting them in the...

I have a DL question. As it gets deeper, do ya'll just let it pile up against the hardware cloth or do you put boards up along the bottom of the pen to help keep it in? I'm thinking like a 1" x 12" board?

I have a question to those of you using the DLM. When you clean out your coop in the spring or when ever you clean it, do you need to put the litter in a compost pile for a while or can you put it directly into your garden?

I haven't gotten my chickens yet, still working on the coop, but I did rake up 10 40 gallon bags of leaves a few days ago. Once the remaining leaves dry out from this rain, I plan on raking up more to use once I get them.

I believe it's the cedar aroma, it bothers their respiratory system. I live out in the country in the Tyler/Longview area. About 2 hours east of Dallas and 1 hour west of Shreveport, La. I was born in Lubbock, Tx, and moved here when I was about 2.

Question on using ashes for dusting. Will any type of ash do or does it need to be wood ash? We did some pine straw burning over the weekend and thought I'd shovel it up to save it for my chicks when I get them in.

I don't have a fireplace. I'll have to hit up my mom to save hers when she cleans out her fireplace. What does the peat moss do?

    Deep litter method

After reading the whole post, the DL method sounds like something I would like to try out. Seems like it would be a lot easier than cleaning out the pens on a daily/weekly basis. I'm in the process of turning 2 stalls into a coop and covered pen and plan on using DL in them both.
