I was curious about this as well. We have a silkie roo I noticed picking on the girls. He never did before and my other roosters are very sweet to the girls. Is it something they grow out of? Mines closer to a year..
Thanks and yeah it's hard with only 5 hens lol. Springtime is here though and with the money from selling your trio you could probably buy point of lay pullets. Of coarse if they are more just pets that's no a possibility lol.
Deer netting is a good idea. It's only a little cheaper then...
I think the temp fence is a good idea. Just until your little ones are older. It's a difficult situation. The thing is young children just don't have the capacity to sense that kind of danger. We are about to have our fifth babe. My two youngest are 4 and 16 months. They just want to "snuggle"...
I wasn't worried about the kids hitting the roosters. More of the rooster seeing the stick as a threat and that starting an attack. You know your rooster best though. Mine would have definitely attacked a stick lol
Don't wave a stick! Most roosters find younger Kids threatening because of their fast movements and loud voices. Not every rooster is meant for every home. I would rehome him and adopt a new rooster. One that your kids can handle frequently. With lots of handling and treats they can build an...
You will have a better chance of seeing personalitys by just having one in with the hens at a time. I would alternate for a week at a time to get an idea about which one works best for your needs.
Our silkie rooster only crows when he thinks there is a threat or first thing in the morning. He isn't very loud though.
You need to have your kids handle him more from a younger age. That way he recognizes them as an alpha. We have 4 kids soon to be 5 ages 1 to 13. They all know how to handle...
I would like to free range him with my other chickens. We have a full grown polish bantam rooster and a jubilee orpington roo who is still younger. Maybe 15 weeks. Think this could work? I don't worry about the jubilee but my polish can be very protective...
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who offered advice. I went back in there last night and immediately picked him up and carried him around for a bit. Then out him away while I handled the girls lol where could see me. He was very watchful but pretending to ignore me lol. After I let him back...
Lol our guy can get that way to when I first let him out of the coop in the morning. His attentions are not appreciated but he thinks he is a stud lol. I've snatched him up a few times and made him sit in my lap in the mornings and that seemed to calm him down. :)
Agreed. We love our roosters but still treat them like roosters. We have always carried him around and never had these issues. Recently we've been busy working and haven't had as much time to spend with him so I'm wondering if he is just testing the waters. For now I've told the kids to stay out...
Thanks. That's what I'll do. I wasn't prepared this morning and was wearing my coop shoes (sandals) next time I'll wear my muck boots. He usually doesn't bother me but I've noticed lately he breaks up squabbling with the hens. When I broke it up I think he was showing dominance but I didn't have...
Hey all. We have a polish bantam roo that we adore. He has always been respectful even though he isn't a cuddle anymore lol. Recently he has started getting very overprotective of his ladies. Not uncommon and I'm not overly worried about it since he is in a coop. We are trying to integrate 4 new...
