black over anything except white usually results in black the first generation... with white, it's anyone's guess, since both black and white can hide pretty much all other mutations.
also... a bit of a pet peeve, but...

ok just a heads up... I'm headed for 2 shows in the next month. the VPBA will be at the caroline county fairgrounds north of Richmond VA, and the TVPC show (also ABA nationals) in Knoxville tn...
I've got a variety of chicks I can bring with me, if someone is interested, but they will be...
for some heritage breeds, that may be true... but it's going to vary by breed too.
I had one roo that had stiffer tail feathers, making a peak on his cushion, he passed that along to nearly every chick I hatched out, even tho the hens were nice. he's gone, better roos remain.
personally I would say choose type over color. the genetics between calico and mille are the same, it's just the expression of color that may vary. so pick your best typed birds and run with it.
I have one that hatched from my mfc pen recently... I locked up one of my blue Columbian boys for someone that was coming to pick him up (he normally free ranged) and looks like he had something to do with this little splash guy. LOL he passed along the mottling for sure, AND the blue, to one...
lol I don't worry about the crow decoys, I've got a... a murder of crows? think that's what they call it. LOL anyways a breeding colony not far up the hill from my house. but boy do they make a racket when they see a hawk. it's usually when they're nesting the hawks come around, I guess...
i'm just the opposite. i don't trust my broodies as i've had hens scramble whole clutches, switch nests, give up all together, etc. so i hatch everything myself and decide who gets chicks to play with...
currently have one dorking girl in the broody house awaiting chicks - think i'm going to...
i call them all mille fleur, with the understanding that they won't all color out equally... regardless of chick color they still vary all over the place.
i think a 'sport' is anything varying fron the accepted ABA/APA color varieties... aka a project variety or side effect of another, such as blue... blue is recognized, splash is not, though splash is the true-breeding variety of the same mutation... so a splash lemon blue would also be...
all 3 happen... my own chicks tends toward the brown, but the others just depend on the e-locus gene the line is based on... and if the parents are a mixture of e-locus mutations, anything's possible.
an explanation of the basic mutations and how a few interract can be found in my sig.
I think where you are confusing the dominance/recessiveness of mutations, is by considering them variations on the same locus...
there are 18 primary loci involved in chicken genetics for color. each loci may display multiple mutations, such as the e-locus. within that one locus, yes you will...
