no need to try to feather sex these as the boys are extremely obvious at just few weeks...btw my chick from a trader joes hen and an araucana roo just started laying the most amazing everyday green/blue eggs. She is rumpless, peacomb, clean faced white with orange flecks.
Hi all I forgot who I was talking to about fertile eggs on here..it was someone from Southern Oregon and there were none..but today I was at shop n kart in ashland and they are now carrying fertile medium brown eggs!! It was 3.49 a dozen..they were the same brand Winco in california carries I think.
Yes I have two of the 12 hatched but I was having serious humidity issues so I cant say for sure if it was them or me...with 5 broodies it will be awhile before I try again....lol
Got my first tj puller egg yesterday though! It's the tinted one in the left lower corner
And Raley's has brown fertile eggs, too...but it's awfully easy to candle the white ones...I can actually do it withour opening the incubator through the clear plastic with my really bright mag light..it's good enough to see veining in the white tj eggs.
So I know the TJ eggs are a white or pale brown due to the leghorn, but what in the world is Winco using for its fertile layers. I posted pics a few days ago of what my friend is getting and they are as dark as some marans. I actually told her it wasnt that hen but the hen I gave her has...
So I hatched a bunch of Winco and trader joes eggs in fall..I gave my friend what I thought was a trader joes hen but I now believe to be a Winco hen...check out her egg color and yes both eggs are from the same hen..she layed a jumbo the other day.
I have had really good luck with both Tj and Winco in redding. The Tj ones are great because it's so easy to see the development through the white shell. If you call ahead they will pull cartons and save them for you. I couldn't find any fertile eggs in medford. I think it's an Oregon thing.
So I went to the hyline website and started reading their manual. It looks like Tj chicks may be sexable based on color at hatch and also based on feathering in the first week or two. Anyone else checked that out? What do you think?
Ok..I need a little help from those of you who have been posting here for a while..I love love love the idea of hatching grocery store eggs just because it seems like such a miracle. I've been able to hatch from Winco and trader joes and the chicks have developed wonderfully into chickens...
I'm kind of bummed.. I had four pipping and one fully developed but only two actually made it out! This afternoon they were alive and I resisted the urge to assist but tonight they were gone. When I opened the eggs they were fully developed but extremely cramped so I'm wondering if part of being...
I just heard my fertile barnstar eggs from raleys peeping! There are just five left of the original 9 or 10 I set. Can't wait to see what hatches.. It can't be long now!
Congrats! Those look great! All the fertile trader joes I have ever seen in the store are chalk white shells, however Winco and rayleys both carry fertile brown eggs. I wonder what you would get if you crossed the offspring of the tj eggs?
