    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Thanks! The SLW are super cautious of us too. The ones who are easiest are the Polish, BO, and the RIR. None of them seem to mind be caught or held. The RIR will try to run off when they see a hand come in, but once caught, they settle right in and are calm. It's fun to start seeing their...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

So so sorry to hear about your Faverolle! We have three. One has an eye infection, but seems to be on the mend. When I finally had to separate my little Silver Laced Wyandotte because of her wry neck and others pecking at her, we gave her a stuffed animal (suggested here on BYC). She snuggled...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Currently, I use paper towels and change daily. We have 26 chicks. It's a pretty easy clean up. We have them inside of a utility room off of our garage. Tomorrow I may switch over to pin shavings because they will be a week old. We are also putting in a dust bath today.

I also have Polish chicks. In terms of poopiness, the Buff Laced stay clean but the White Crested Black Polish are a bit less clean. The Faverolles though ... wow, they just seem dirty overall. Yet, the grown hens I've seen are gorgeous. Today we are going to inspect each one more closely and...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

They are about 5 - 6 days old. They are hatchery chicks and were mailed out last Monday. I assume they were hatched on Sunday. They were all vaccinated and sexed, which I also would guess takes some time after they hatch. They arrived at my PO on Wednesday morning, so I have had them ~3 1/2 days.

What are you all doing for pasty butts? Are you noticing there are pasty butts but also just dirty butts where you see poo on the surrounding area but the vent is still clear? Do you find that it is like cement to remove and what are you finding most successful and least stressful for the chicks...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

So cute! I have four Buff Orpingtons and three Silver Laced Wyandottes. They are almost one week old now. The Buff Orps are super clean with no poo problems at all. The SLW seem to get pasty looking butts, but then when I inspect closer, I see the vent is still clear so I guess stuff is just...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

I'm really glad to see all these windows on your coop. Our coop came with the house. It's a lovely 100 ft^2 seemingly well built structure and on both sides, the walls are partial windows. Looks really great, but I was worried because so many coops I see are more closed off looking. With our...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

I use a heat lamp. I have 26 chicks and have thought about trying to fashion out an MHP this weekend. Other than the little one, they all seem ok. I realized last night that one is either missing an eye or it just never opened. That chick otherwise seems fine and I never even noticed. It's one...

Here is a picture of my current favorite chick, a sassy little Polish. We call her Disco. Our youngest son is raising her for his 4H project.

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Hey folks! Thoughts I'd share the experience we've had over the past 24 hours with a chick that came in our box and had (has still) a wry neck, or I think also called stargazing. Since many of us on this thread are totally new to chicks, it may be useful to hear my experience. First, we...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Thanks! So far, she is incredibly listless. I may separate her, but then I worry about her staying warm. About every 20 mins I put her to the water and she drinks a bit. She then slogs back over under the heat lap with and puts herself in the middle of other chicks. Some of them were really...

Phone rang at 0515 ... chicks!!! Ordered 25, got 27. One of the Silver Laced Wyandottes looks like she won't make it. All the others are running around, drinking, eating, chirping and generally very active. So thankful that they arrived healthy!

Thanks for the excellent tip @3riverschick ! I will stop by TSC tonight and pick this up. Right now I am most concerned with dehydration because weather is cold but freezing temps.
