Even with "Breeder Quality" Dominique stock, you can still get an occasional single comb.

Candled Saturday evening and after 7 days. 61% developing. Threw 10 out. Non-starters. Put an additional 30 in the incubator last night. For eggs collected in early February, 61% isn't too bad I think., especially when compared to last year. We kept 14 Dominique hens/pullets and one Cockerel...

Last year 2013, nearly 1/2 of my dom chicks had single combs. This year none. And yes, they are all Dominiques. The single comb gene is in my flock, which is OK, as single comb cockerels are delicious. They are all Dominiques, though I don't use any single combed birds in my breeding program...

Very true. I wouldnt want a Dom hen to lay more than 200 eggs over the course of a year. I don't think she could handle it. And we don't want the Dom hens to start looking like a barred Leghorn either....

Another observation from this past spring.... My original assumption when i first acquired Dominiques, was that hatchery birds would be better layers overall than show stock.....When I was running my breeding pens this spring, most of my hatchery birds were in the laying yard, not in the...

In 2013 my laying Dominique hens had an average lay factor of .512. That is for the whole year, which works out to be 187 eggs per hen per year. Working on improving that, but its a long term project. I also breed to standard. I also have lots of "utility" birds each year that I cull from my...

Have you contacted the members in CA and OR? I know that some of them frequent shos and sometimes they will meet folks at those shows and deliver birds. The DCA website has an updated member and breeder list. Yes, it looks al little bleak, but its better than it was several years ago. Just some...

We in the Dominique Club of America are doing what we can to encourage more folks to become Dominique breeders, but it is difficult. This past spring we had a membership drive where we gave away a new incubator, and many of us sent hatching eggs "FREE" to new folks who wanted to become breeders...

I prefer Dom -eh-nick, but that's just my preference. As far as I know, either is fine. What I don't like is a youtube video in which the lady calls her hens Dome-in-eeks. Just sounds silly.
