Did my first peachick necropsy on a ten day old chick. Chick hatched with a larger than normal belly and it never got smaller:

Any conclusion ? Looks like the yoke is still there....George
This one was interesting... You're correct, the yolk is still there even though it should have been absorbed by this age. Still have lots more pictures to share, along with what I researched. Times like this I wish I had sent it off for necropsy.

Since doing this, I learned that birds have a Meckel's diverticulum, which looks like this:

Had I know about this, I wold have tried to check it for an obstruction. More pictures to come.

Note the large large blob... that was the very enlarged spleen. Will post more pictures later.

Just did my second peachick necropsy on a 41 day old chick. Waiting for DH to get off the computer so I can post pictures. This one also failed to absorb it's yolk.

That Liver was definitely not happy. Might have been being compressed by the pressure from the yolk sac, it looks an odd shape, and therefore the blood flow wasn't right.
The heart tissue looks very pale too. I've been looking at those 'clots'. They look decidedly well shaped. Are they just the contents of very friable Atria? I can see tissue striations around them. OR the Atria burst? Just a thought.
Fascinating
