Have you ever seen an egg laid?

I actually got see one of my chickens lay her first egg because she got pushed out while laying by another chicken. and she egg sings even when other chickens lay. so depends on the chicken. If shes someone in the nest she starts egg singing.

Egg song before, then LOTS of nesting behavior like scratching around. When the egg is laid, the hen stands vertical, sometimes with some grunting sounds, then the egg comes. Their body relaxes and some hens will lay back down to rest for a while. They usually sing the egg song when they exit the nest, but sometimes will sing it before, if they are disturbed.

Duly, Happy Chooks, it's interesting that because mine stand/squat but maybe they would stand more upright if they had the headroom (the roof is low in the nestbox).
Bok- bok- bkurkk after, which I've heard is an amouncement not of laying an egg but that timing is good for fertilisation (I.e. 'im in the mood for a roooooster baby!)(apparently?)

Yes, lots of times. And they are just as likely to sing their song before and during the time on the nest as right after laying.

You should try to watch sometime, Joe. It's pretty fascinating. I'm sure you'll have some of your trademark observations upon witnessing the event.

I'm just not sure if they'll perform if I have the nest box open when they're busy. Kinda like staring at the wife on the toilet. (which I never do, but can only imagine the response, and consequences)

One very interesting thing I've observed when observing the egg laying event is that once the hen gets into "the zone", she is so relaxed and focused, I can quietly open the nest box door and stand there and watch and it doesn't phase her in the least. This goes for even my skittish hens. The problem with this activity is it can sometimes take a while to get to the grand finale, so you have to have endurance.

As for your wife, I won't even go there.
