Some of the Girls..and Guys(PICS)

Kate, Tux and Livvie are Cochin/Silkie crossed with Barred Rock-their mom was the Barred Rock. Best little trio in the world, too. Livvie always marches up to me to be picked up and held.

That's what I'd like in a chicken. I'd like one that wouldn't mind being picked up. I've got one gals who lets me pet and scratch her sometimes, but not like what you're saying.

Do you think if I raised a couple from little chicks that they would be more friendly? And if so, then which breeds would be the best for that? I like the look of Wyandottes, but don't know if they are friendly as a rule.

My dilemma is that I'd like a couple of egg in the springtime, but I'm afraid I'll get roos and I just can't have more than my one. I'd have to give them away and would expect that they'd most likely be killed.

I have Wyandottes, and although they're sweet girls, they arent what you'd call cuddly. They don't want to be picked up necessarily. The pure Barred Rocks and the Barred Rock crosses are my friendliest birds of all. I raised all mine from chicks, the older girls being hatchery chicks bought at the feedstore and the rest I hatched myself, with the exception of Hawkeye, my main flock rooster. Some of mine are even jealous if you pick up one and hold her too long and they pull on my pants leg to be picked up, too. Maybe it's partly because I handle them alot and spend alot of time with them, but I think it's also because of the breeds. One other girl who is very friendly is my RIR/Buff Orpington cross girl, but she's quite an armload to pick up, LOL. And one of my Ameraucanas likes to be held as well.
My main suggestion would be Barred Rocks. I just think they're an all-round great breed for egglaying, both consistency and size, and friendly nature.

Thanks for the advice.

Just thinking out loud and wondering your thoughts...Do you think that I could do an egg swap (maybe 3 or 4 eggs) with one of my BO's in the spring when she's broody, have her hatch them and .....would she let me handle them? Or is that asking too much? (My two BOs are relatively new to me and they were farm raised and are not as warm and friendly as many have mentioned. I'm working on them, but don't hold out hope that they'll be jumping in my arms anytime soon.)

If I waited and got day old chicks there would be no way to know their sex anyway and I'd have just as great a chance of getting a couple of roos....right?

ps. should have mentioned that I don't have an equipment for hatching eggs and I really can't get many more chickens anyway so purchasing equipment would be silly.

I need to work out the roo thing - mostly in my mind. I can find a home - my son would take them, but they would end up in his freezer and I need to come to terms with it. Just the soft side of me.

Thanks again,
Colleen

Sure, you could do that. I know, the extra rooster thing is something to come to terms with when you hatch eggs. My local feedstore gets sexed pullets from Ideal so I could get pullets if I wanted any of the breeds they get, but once I got a Lt Brahma sexed as a pullet who turned out to be a sweet little boy and sold him.
