Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

One more fluffy chick today. That makes 4. She is still sitting tight though on 4 eggs. I know she stole them so I don't know how far along they might be if they are even Ok. Will she get up when she believes they are done? I figured I'd give it till Wednesday at the latest. I've read that some can go as long as 25 days. Given the fact that she may not have been sitting on them as long as the others. Also had to clean a huge Broodie poo out of the nest, blah!! Couldn't get any good pictures yet.
Refresh my memory... how many days since the first one hatched? Hens will often sit for at least 3 days from the first out.... I believe Mother Nature built in a 'safety net' for chickens in that chicks don't have to eat or drink for the first few days. If you want her to continue to set you have a couple of options.... place food and water very close by so she can reach it to begin teaching the early hatchers how to eat and drink while still covering the rest of the eggs.
After 2 or 3 days I would pull each unhatched egg, candle it very quickly to make sure it isn't sloshy and then mark it and place it back under her. If she gets up for a few minutes to stretch you can do it easier.
If the eggs look viable but you think they are too many days behind... fire up an incubator and finish them in there. A hen will want to set, but her instinct to take care of the early hatchers may win out and if she leaves the nest it may kill the later additions.
If you do hatch them in the 'bator and it hasn't been more than a couple of days since the last natural hatch then you may be able to graft them back to the hen... it is riskier the farther you get from the hatch starting day though.

Hi! I'm in southwestern Washington Co. I'm a new chicken momma and theres a couple breeds I would love to try. I would love Araucana, Ameraucana, Swedish Flower Hen, lavender Orps and Dominique. Is there anyone within driving distance that might have a couple of some of these? Thanks!

Hi,

Lovin these rare breeds, huh? Not all these breeders are on this list. Try surfing the Net using the
breed name and "Pennsylvania". Also, go to the breed Club's website and look thru the Members
Directory. Many times breeders have great birds, just no web presence.

I REALLY like the rare breeds and the old heritage breeds! I know you can get some from hatcheries but I'd like to have better quality and representation of the breed. I am seriously bitten by the chicken bug!

The first 2 hatched on Saturday, the next one on Sunday and then one today. On Sunday evening I put a small bowl of food and a chick waterer in the brooder with her. I knew the 1st 2 where Ok for 24 hours without food, today they are both drinking and eating as she watches and clucks at them. The little yellow one (Sunday hatch) stays under her as well as the one hatched today. Ok, so it sounds like my best bet is to candle tmw and see if anything is going on. Luckily she doesn't mind me messing around so pulling an egg out to candle won't be an issue. Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone.
Grand pap had a blood transfusion on Friday and tested today. His red blood cell count was critical. He wasn't to have another transfusion until Thursday. They decided to 'pull the plug' and not do the transfusion. He went from a dose of dilaudid every 4hrs to a dose every 2hrs and upped his oxygen 2 units in the 3-4hrs we were there. He has easily lost 30lbs in 3 days. My mom says she doesn't think he'll make it through the night. I am not sure, but beyond tomorrow will be a stretch at this point.
