My dog does the same thing. It pisses my neighbors off and I'm even looking into a training collar. I love her too much to find a new home, won't do any good since its a repetitive habit and she's a res dog.

An intact male dog will wander, get him fixed. It's not fair for him if his hormones are telling him to find a girl and he is getting labeled as "stupid" for running off.

We had a dog dropped off at our house and it wasn't so much he ran away but he is a stubborn thing! We use a shock collar on him that has a tone button. He hears that and IMMEDIATELY turns for home. But there are times his stubbornness get the best of him and we have to use the shock button

. That part I don't like

I know this is an old thread, but i would love some advice on the same subject. I have a (about) nine month old lab. I can keep him in the house with no problem and i crate him when i leave due to chewing everything. When im home he chews on his own toys and he has a lot of them. He was 'fixed' about a month ago and he has calmed a bit about jumping and clawing at people....he wants to shake and so paws at us. The main issue is that he runs away if i let him out without a leash. It is 1000 ft to the road and there are 30,000 acres of national forest behind us....but he runs straight to the road. My hubbie wants a shock collar but i am afraid it will make him run further away. I take him to the park but i can only do this a couple times a week. He will run solid for an hour and then run straight to the road as soon as we get home. Do you think there is a way to train him to stay here? There is plenty of running space. We have over seven acres so even staying away from the road he has 4 to 5 acres to run on.....not to mention the forest behind us. Plenty of room, but he wont stay. Of couse on leash he is not getting much exercise as i cant run for an hour with him. He stays with me at the park or comes when i call....but he wont do it at home. He is good natured not aggressive, but maybe dominant. Ive thought of an electric fence but our land is not round. Also very rocky so im not sure about burying wire.

you can look into an invisible fence. it works for some dogs but not others. Personally, my lab ignored it. Even with it turned to the max, he would just scream and yelp as he charged through, stop and shake it off, and continue on his merry way.

Instead, I would work on boundary training him. First step is that he isn't outside off-leash PERIOD. Set up training sessions where you walk the perimeter of where you want him to go and correct any time he starts to show interest in anything beyond that point. It's best to have a visible boundary, preferably several feet from the road. Farther is better. Once he is reliable on a short leash, go to a long line. Same thing again. Get with a trainer experienced in working with e-collars and have them teach you to use one and then work with that. It's a long process that takes several months.
And in that entire time, your dog can't be off-leash in the area. Even one time of running to the road teaches him that it's possible and sets back training.

Thank you! I had already decided to try and work with him myself and use lots of treats, too. So i will see how it goes. And then decide about the e-collar. I take him to the park and he seems ok there. And there are a couple places i can take him in the game reserve where he can run. Thanks again.
Well, i still wonder about the wireless fence, but i dont know about the trees as we are in the woods.
