Illinois...

What is the fencing you have? Looks ideal for introducing our chicks in the coop. There's a space under the poop board that I could section off. I like the idea of something that's removable.
I'm pretty sure I got it from a neighbor's curb, but it's not that expensive. It doesn't have a door- Just an accordion fold panels. I use clips, zip ties, or even string to hold the opposite ends together. I normally grab something to put on top to use as a temp day-time chick tractor. I like that it can be folded flat and and put away when not in use. It's not sturdy enough to keep chickens safe if there's a dog, heavy T-storm, or high winds.

I went hunting at Farm and Fleet and Walmart today for a dog play pen actually based on my inspiration from your pic. I couldn't find anything reasonably priced - they wanted $80!!! I'll be ordering online. Thanks for the link.

I didn't order a dog fence yet. I should have, but just didn't. The chicks are in the old dog crate now out in the coop. It will work, it's just bulky and inconvenient. All 8 Easter Eggers being added to a 2 bird flock containing a 1 year old rooster and a 7 year old hen... tomorrow should be an interesting day in the coop. The rooster already didn't look very pleased with the noise the chicks were making when I was putting them in the crate.

He looks grumpy 😂
How many hatched?
Here, we got 13 out of 14. (one died while hatching)

I gave 2 eggs to the school (at day 18) The teacher was hatching her own chicken eggs but had fertility issues. It was looking like a lonely only situation. Since my hatch was due just 24 hours before hers, I offered her 2 turkeys and 2 serama eggs. She ended up with 1 orp, 1 turkey, and 2 seramas. An interesting brooder indeed.

Of course it's interesting here too. I have a frizzle bantam Cochin broody caring for 13 poults and 2 orps. She's started to molt and has a bald head - just like a turkey.

Tuesday Between rains I found a box turtle trying to get out of the poultry yard. I put her on the other side. When I came back she was wanting in, so I put her back in. She wasn't out long enough to lay eggs. So I figured she didn't like the shorter grass in the mowed yard. Haven't seen her since. First time I seen one on my property. Only the 3rd one within a mile of my house... and one was just a shell.

Hopefully she didn't get washed away with the flooding.

There should be no water in this picture 😞 she was behind me about 150ft up a hill. Hopefully she's ok

Cool to see a turtle. DD wanted to find a turtle so bad when she and I hiked through the creek by our campground. We saw plenty of small fish and a large toad, but no turtle.
