Why, when you are waiting for a few eggs, do the girls just hang outside the coop chatting instead of getting down to business ?

Because that is the way FEMALES operate, you should know that  lau.gif

But that's exactly the problem, people ARE adding other breeds.

I saw that a breed had become extinct except for one Cock in the ealry 1920's, but it was "BROUGHT BACK" by using other hens. But for me, it's just NOT the same breed, it may be a look-a-like, but it's NOT the same.

I have crossed birds that resemble Icelandics - many Icelandic breeders can't tell the difference, but I KNOW the difference, and it would be fraud to sell the crosses as such, even if you can't tell them apart.

Just my take on it. . .

I think we said the same thing lol many generations down the line when it breeds true in type and characteristics it is a breed, but just tossing in this other breed or that other breed to make a color makes it no longer its original breed. clear as mud? hehe... I like you, do not think its right to add in this or that and continue calling it the breed you liked. if you crossed orps and wyandotte its now an orpandotte in my opinion. but I am no pro chicken breeder so will just stick with what I got.

That's why many refer to new varieties as "projects". Because it can take many many generations to get the new variety to breed true in type and characteristics of the breed. Yes, the first cross is just a mutt, 50/50 of each breed crossed. Lets go w/ Orpingtons/Wyandottes crossed. So the 2nd generation, should only be 25% wyandotte if you breed that 50/50 bird back to an Orpington. By the 3rd generation, it's only 12.5% wyandotte, 4th, 6.25% wyandotte, 5th generation just over 3% and 6th generation just over 1.5%......so.......it doesn't take too long in the big scheme of things to get most of the wyandotte gone except for the new color gene or pattern gene or what have you. This is of course assuming you are working with an excellent quality and very typey flock of Orpingtons for the project. If they don't match type to begin with, then yes, you will just be making a big mess.

Hi Everyone! I had my first session harvesting some cockerels last Sunday. However - when I opened the first of three boxes - I was not expecting the rooster to be quite so....wide awake and lively? Doh! He got away in the neighborhood and no one has been able to catch him since. Of course - this is a neighborhood with no roosters allowed. roll.png So - does anyone know the best way to catch him? Anyone approaches during the day and he is OUT of there...skittish is putting it mildly. I don't live in the area - so will be going down around dusk to see if I can see/hear him.

Also - what might be the best way to capture? I was thinking grab him off a tree at dusk/night if we can find him - but has anyone had success at capturing with a cage? Does anyone have a cage I could borrow that wouldn't trap every neighborhood cat?

thank you! dawn

have a long poled salmon net ?

And a flashlight, locate him or watch where he roosts at night, blind him with the flash light & net him...you will need a partner or two.

Good luck !
