My dog killed my turken chick :(

I never thought my dog would kill a chick. I put a box with 2 chicks over the heater vent (I took the top off) so they had heat for the night until morning I could Get them a lamp. I folded the box in the way so it doesnt open. Woke up the next morning to a flipped box, a bloody chick on the floor, and my turken completly missing. I think it fell into the vent, and got cooked. now me and my mom are shuving the shop vac down the vent to see if hes in there hit.

I know most people dont like turkens because they are ugly, but I thought he was the cutest thing world.

I never would have thought my little mini dachshund, whos scared of my big chickens, to even want anything to do with the chicks.

RIP: little turken, and unknown breed of chicken

No offense, but leaving a cardboard box over a heating vent was probably not a very good idea in the first place.  Also, "wienie" dogs are known for their hunting abilities.  True, not of birds, but they were originally bred to hunt.  If I were you, and the chicks have to stay in a cardboard box, I would make sure the box was in my room so I could keep an ear out for them as I slept.

Sorry for your loss, and I'm not trying to be hard on you:  I just get a little over-zealous when i read about incidences that could have been prevented. sad

What's the two things they tell you are healthiest to eat? Chicken and fish. You know what you should do? Combine them, eat a penguin.

Primary breeds I raise/sell eggs and chicks from:  EE, dark Cornish bantams, silkies of mixed color, bantam cochins of mixed color, Naked Neck/showgirls, BLRW bantams, Khaki Campbell ducks, and Coturnix quail.

No offenence taken.
I had the cardoard box only on it alittle, in the corner not enough to bake them. I guess I never expected her to kill a chick since shes terrifyied of my chickens. Though it will never happen again

To pervent ever happening: dog is in kennel t night, dog is tied up on leesh when chickens are out. No more chick boxes on my floor.

I'm so sorry about your chicks.  hugs

Many of us have lived and learned in so many of the same or other situations; unfortunately, at another's expense, and it's a heart breaking lesson that's never forgotten.  Wish I could say that in my almost 50 years on this earth I'd never made a error, but I've made plenty.  hugs
