Lemon Cuckoo Orpingtons

Sorry, I haven't read this entire thread, so I don't know if this has been answered or not, but:

Can you have a Lemon Orpington that is not cuckoo? That sounds funny, but what exactly does the label "cukoo" mean.... is it the barring? So if my yellowish orpington does not have any barring, is she a Lemon Orpington rather than a Lemon Cuckoo Orpington? The breeder said "Lemon Orpington," but I can't remember if she stuck the word, Cuckoo in the label or not. We also got a Cuckoo Maran from her as well, and she is clearly speckled... or is it barred?

Well here she is!! The breeder was so nice, he actually gave her to me and said to send him the money if she is actually a she!! I got one with no barring. Not sure if it will develop over time? As long as she is a sweet, healthy girl, I'll be happy;)

A "Lemon" colored Orp without barring would be a Buff Orpington.

I purchased a batch of LCO chicks from Jordan Farms & all turn out to be roosters. ALL 7 of them! Two of them we thought were hens until they started crowing! They did not have the double barring gene. I am not knowledgeable about the genetics at all, but thought I would post this picture for referencing & comments. If anybody near 17339 is looking for a lemon with the double barring, please PM me.

If my cuckoos were covered with a lavender orp, what would I get. Thanks for helping. Lost in genetics

I have two: a hen named Lemon Pie and a rooster named Lemonade. Lemonade is pretty mean though :( but lemon pie is the sweetest chicken

Wanted to just say.. I either misunderstood or was misinformed. Hens can be double barred as well.
Is this a statement or a question? I heard to that hens only carried 1 barring/cuckoo gene. Do the barring and the cuckoo gene act the same?

I have this question too but for a different reason. I got 3 hens last year 1 was clearly a cuckoo the other two had to be buffs. But now this year both of the "buffs" have lightened tremendously and I think I can actually see barring one hens neck feathers.

Quote: Just wondering about Jordan Farms chicks myself as I got mine and lost them all within a week except 1 and it is a BUFF pullet. The guy said he didn't have any buff so I am a little confused. Which brings me to the question can hens/pullets have the cuckoo gene and not show it?

So I am totally confused. How does the Lemon Cuckoo gene really work. Does the hen carry only 1 gene or does she carry 2? Why would my hens look buff last year but considerably lighter this year with a sister having the cuckoo gene from the get go? I would like to get into breeding this color but I am not sure if it will be just too much of a headache for me.

here is Gertie my 1 known lemon cuckoo hen

one buff

2 buffs

I have to get updated pics today

This is my Lemon Cuckoo orpington cockerel.

He is the sweetest cockerel of the flock.
I was wondering if I bred him to a buff orp what color would I get?

I love mine and am almost down to mostly double barred hens. but yet the cock count is higher then the pullets

BTW my lemon hens that are not barred are much lighter in color that the hatchery buffs. I got mine from a private breeder that was closing out. My roos are awesome in their temperment. And pass their size. Some take a long time to get their fluff in, other not. All the pics are chickens under 1 year in age.

I have what appears to be a pullet that is almost white and heavily barred. Hopefully she doesn't turn into a he on me. But I am pretty good at telling now. I also have an almost white barred cock from that batch. very lemony :D I will take picks of them soon.
