Sulmtalers Thread

Pics
I keep Wheaten Marans and yes, the Wheaten coloration IS sex-able once they begin to feather out. The male wings will have black in them as well as their tail and shoulder feathers. The pullets are a soft brown...like the color of wheat. As the wings are the first to grow, that's where it's first noticed. Just a few short weeks and you know what you have with Wheaten Marans.

I'm hatching my Sulmtalers today so, I don't have any growth photos to post as of yet. I'm assuming that they will be exactly like Wheaten Marans since the end result is basically the same.

Both breeds are yellow downed chicks as well.

Perhaps you can sift through some Wheaten Maran threads for photos. I know there is also, chick sexing photos on a few of the Marans club's websites.

So you saying you can tell gender when they're a week old or less? I'd like to see some pictures please.

I don't have pics on the computer and it is midnight, but if you look here : http://maransofamericaclub.com/wheatenmarans.php

Scroll to the bottom and you will see, wheaten is wheaten... so eventhough they are talking about marans, it is the same for Sulmtalers.

I guess I did not realize they could be sexed so early. I can clearly see the difference at 3-4 weeks but I guess I have not looked close enough at 1-2 weeks. I have 1, 2 and 3 week olds in the brooders. I will get pictures tomorrow and post.

They hatched 100%.... mostly female. And no, but at a early age (as soon as their wings start to come in) you can tell them apart because they are wheaten coloration.
Ooops, you're right that is what was written, I am the one that wrote it out wrong. Pretty cool you got mostly girls.

Me too, I looked at the 1 week olds last night and the wing feathers are still too small to tell. I will look at the 2 week olds today. They are in the brooder in the barn and I did not want to go to the barn in my jammies last night. LOL I know it is easy to spot the boys at 3 weeks.
