The maggots used in wound care are laboratory bred green bottle fly larva and they are removed as soon as they have completed the wound clean-up, if left on they can burrow into and feed on live tissue.

Thank you for sharing! Came in for lunch, turned into a short one.

Sorry for putting you on an impromptu diet! I just wanted to make sure nobody made the mistake of thinking they could let the maggots remain without harm coming to the bird. The turkey is the third time I've dealt with Fly Strike, the first 2 times were both pet rabbits and I had no idea it had a name, I just knew that maggots were not a good thing and did a lot of bathing in soapy water and maggot plucking. The Swat was so easy it was almost hard to believe, and my turkey is one tough old girl.

besides it is just a bug larvae, do butter fly larvae bother you or tad poles?

Actually it didn't phase me, stuff like that is old hat to me. I've done a lot of minor surgeries to all types of back yard critters. Nastiest thing that bothered me was having to reach in to pull a placenta from a cow that would not clean out . I do have limits...

Speaking of tough old birds, we have a Royal Palm turkey that got attacked by a coyote while she was setting on a nest. She had two huge gnashes on her back and no tail, she healed pretty quickly with just a little cleaning and purple Wound Kote.

Dylansmom, thanks for the education, that is important information we all should know.

Sorry I haven't been updating, it's been a tough week. I took him for an x-Ray Monday & he had 2 brakes in his hip, so was put down...thank you everyone for the advice & replies! Now I've got to work on preventing my white from doing the same thing, he's been a nervous wreck since being solo.
