Oh, if your getting a Rhode Island hen you shouldn't have a problem. My little red hen, Faithful, is the sweetest bird in the flock! So you'l probably be able to settle with a hen! But if your breeding Red Rocks you'll need the RIR cock!
 
Well if your coop is small enough you'll be able to keep them warm using their body heat. I only use a regular light bulb for egg laying in the winter (Hens need 12 hours of light per day for egg laying) and no heat at all. Living in upper Canada I get nasty winters with lows of -51 F! Your rock is going to be a chick when you get it? That means it will be fully established (Means at it's hardy age) in December! That could be late. I would use a heat lamp for the winter if you have chicks in it. Oh, I am soooo excited! My little cockerels are crowing! It's a little off the famous tune, but is getting better. Now it's week four for your chicks, hopefully they're going to be good little birds for you!
 
I have a heat Lamp that I got with the brooding box when I got the peepers, it's a smaller one with a decent heat source. My coop is going to be 80" long by 80" tall and 40" in width approximately. Yeah the rock will be 7 weeks, and the buff orp 8 I believe
 
Okay, those are more like chooks (Australian name for young growing birds) than chicks! They should last! They'll only have a few more weeks to full weight! So, your coop is going to be a six foot? Great!
 
Yup! I'm going to get it started soon! Gonna go pick up my orp/brahma cross and my buff orp tomorrow. And hopefully get someone with a truck to help me get pallets to start with!
 
Great stuff! The pallets are free? They are your best choice for price! Your getting the new chooks tomorrow! Oh Boy! You'll enjoy them! Finally, a fully feathered chicken, huh? The Buff Orpington is a very sweet bird!
 
I'll have a small run in the back for the smaller chickens, or when I can't get out to watch them free range (I'm highly afraid of losing them to hawks)
