How to clean your incubator:

Whatever you use, rinse it well and some people put it in the sun to dry. That might not be an option this time of year.
Again, Keep the electronics dry.

Someone in this thread recommends using peroxide.

For everyone who can't stay home to watch their babies hatch, here are a few pictures of my first baby! There is a small pip on the egg next to the one with a more advanced pip. Enjoy!

Here comes the zip!!!

Almost out!!!

This little peeper is half White leghorn and half easter egger. Oh, and day 21 for these guys starts at 9m tonight, so this one is a little early.

No, not averse. I just try my best to raise them as naturally as possible without adding any supplements or anything like that. I don't give immunizations, either. I bet I can find a natural way to add vitamin D to their diet...I'll research it. Thanks for the help!

ETA: Duh. I'm silly. I'll just give them some crumbled hard boiled eggs and/or milk. I don't know what made me think apples...(shakes head)

The ratio of calcium to phosphorus needs to be correct. Vitamin D regulates the use of those minerals in the body.
Fatty fish like salmon, herring and sardines are good sources. The dairy products that have vitamin D have been fortified.
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin as are A, E and K.
Megadoses of the fat soluble vitamins can be toxic.
Chickens that forage outside all day AND are fed a complete feed should have sufficient D in their systems.

Look into oils for Vitamin D. Be careful though--too much fish oil makes the eggs taste fishy.

I have never given immunizations or anti biotics either. I test for worms but they have not been detected. I have had some lice and mite issues and treated with ivermectin and valbazen.

Corid for Cocci was used a couple of times but I have not had to use it in several years. I do give them Big Ole Bird from Southland Organics and will add calf manna if the egg shells go soft. I have also used food grade DE but for the calcium in it--it is much more easily digested than oyster shell calcium.
The advantage of oyster shell is that the large particles stay in the upper digestive tract longer allowing them to reach the calcium absorption sites in the small intestine at night when the egg is normally in the shell gland.

The (almost) final count for the Orr tribe is 14 babies. Only 4 of the shipped eggs hatched - they seemed, from the beginning, to have had rougher USPS handling than others I've received. But, of those 4 there are 2 female Bieles and 2 male!

The pics are a little blurry - sorry.

Seven of these little ones go to their new home today! We are starting our friends out with a small backyard flock. My alterior motive being that I will now have more people to talk "chicken" with!

I am west coast all the way

Only 9:30 here..but my hubby and I have already had our traditional pizza and chips, so took early photos. We usually do something silly, like bang on pans, and set off the car alarm. Not sure we will do that tonight. There are fireworks going off already! Will stand and watch at the front door. We have full glass on there, and boy, do we see a lot of fireworks around here.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM A COUPLE OF OLD FOLKS...I SHOULD GO POST THIS ON THE OLD FOLKS THREAD! YEP. :)

Ok, I finally did my photo shoot of my babies after they all fluffed up. I can't help it. I like taking photos of the babies. They don't stay babies for long.

All 14 doing well. Even the one that had to sit in a cup for a day and a half. That foot was pretty bad. It's now walking around really well. :) Actually..running around.

Looks like I have to trim someones little tush. Silkie babies..usually have to do a few.

I call this last one .. Butterball.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, it finally happened. I FINALLY, after 9 long months of waiting, got my very first blue egg from my blue ameraucana girl, Cora. I actually predicted yesterday to my mom that she was gonna lay today, and lo and behold, there it was, nestled in the nesting box all cozy and still warm from being laid

I've never been so proud! Valentine's Day puffy cheeked babies, here I come!!! She will have been laying for about a month by the time I start gathering eggs for that, so hopefully my little cockerel is doing his job

I'm sooooo excited that I might have my own Am babies very soon!!! Pics:

Did you get a picture of the egg to post?

I find talking about eating my birds causes some people to be upset.

You must say, "How are you enjoying these delicious buffalo wings? Yes, yes, they are quite good - in fact, and you will never believe this - THAT particular wing hit me pretty hard in the face as I was putting it into the killing cone! You don't find the meat tough, do you?"
