Yeah, what a beautiful day too. I bet they enjoyed it.getting closer to egg! i let my flock out today (first time for the new roo, very exciting), and one of the cuckoo marans decided to go back in, and fluffed around in a nesting box for a while, and then sang a little song... but no egg. yet. i thought it would make a particularly auspicious start to the new year, to lay the first egg -- but they're close!
No, but they won't mate until they are ready to lay. Without a Roo, they will do the egg squat for you. With a roo they will usually only squat for him.
You will have eggs soon!

Where are the ones you are getting from?
He really is a nice flock roo. Even as a teen, he was gentle with the ladies. I prefer roos that are reserved with people. It is important that they know their boundaries. As soon as I realize a chick is a roo, I try to ignore it. Seems to make for nicer roos all the way around. I have frequently found that roos that are overly bold as chicks often aggressive when older.they did! (although chilly for me -- around 40° most of the day and windy up here on the mountain) -- here are some snaps of max's first venture outdoors here:
out and about with maggie the basque
exploring under the oaks
such a handsome boy
checking out my offering of thistle sprouts
Deann, you were right -- he's *quite* the gentleman, lots of dancing and calling the girls over to check out some new exciting tidbit. and so far quite calm, if a bit reserved, around me. noisy, though!

I hope he quiets down for you!!! I genuinely did not notice him being louder than my other roos. I have noticed that my Sulmataler rooster talks alot more now that he is gone.
