It depends. I have 4 chicks and we brood indoors and with this size flock i would NEVER do it any other way. My family and children have adored having them close and witnessing the many daily changes that happen so fast...and the personality differences are amazing. We simply would not have spent as much time outdoors when them with the weather we have had. This is our first time with chicks, and they are our pets. People speak to their experiences, but it can be misleading to assume that all positive results were SOLEY based on choices made. Mine have had a heat lamp, and are in no way dependant on it. At 18 days old they are now without it and dping great. And in a week they will move outdoors. They are ridiculously tame (and i mean ridiculous lol), and we will miss them once theyre out and will certainly spend as much time out there as weather allows. Do what suits you and your intention for having them. They will not suffer either way, and will all adjust outdoors no matter what you choose and when. There are no adult chicken support groups necessary for unfortunate chicks who spent the first 3-4 weeks indoors...they'll be fine lol
...oh...and with a small flock like mine there is no dust. No odor. (I keep an impeccable house and would not be ok with them otherwise). Im sure it is different with larger flocks, in which case your choice of indoor location would differ. Ours are smack dap in the hub of our daily living area and we love it
