difference between chick starter & grower feed

It depends if you are raising layers or broilers.

I'm still trying to figure out the best ratio of grower to finisher for broilers.

For all chicks: Starter feed until one bag runs out (a couple of weeks for broilers, longer for layers).

Mix starter with grower to transition them to new feed. Good idea to mix feed whenever you are transitioning them to something new.

For Layers: Grower feed until the the pullets are at point of lay, then switch to layer. No calcium for babies!

For Broilers: Grower feed til they are about half grown, then Finisher for the last few weeks.

Who raises Freedom Ranger Broilers? How long do you feed them Finisher?
The last 3 weeks or the last 5 weeks? (out of 11 weeks)

I read some Poultry Science reports that gave conflicting advice on broiler feeding, after careful studies (raising standard broilers for 8 weeks). One got the best results with almost no grower feed and all finisher. The other warned not to use any finisher until after 6 weeks.

I'm going to try Finisher starting in week 7 this year, aiming for less fat and more meat.
