That is always a guess. Some stay twerps and you are better off picking them, others grow.
The tricky part is God never tells me which is which.
Last fall I came across a Hen, about the size of a softball. It looked delicious but was small. So I left it 3 days and came back to find a Hen the size of a softball that was dried out hard and wormy..

I should add, if I was on public land or a place others might stumble across it, I would pick it. I make no excuses or bones about being greedy on wild mushrooms.
