Tell Daryl I LOVE HIM!

Someday we will have a few here. I want LGD and more of our 5 acres fenced with hot wire before we add them. Way too many coyote and stray dogs. He is so precious, congrats!

Hello, I have recently found some emu chicks for sale that are around 1day to 1week old for sale near me. I am planning on buying a few chicks and I was wondering if anyone could inform me on emu brooding. I have read a lot on them but every breeder seems to do something different, just curious to what the best set up would be. And also what do you do when the birds are to old to be in a brooder but not old enough to be out in the pasture?

Any response is greatly appreciated,thanks.

I'm by no means an expert...by that I mean I have only hatched out one emu and he/she is only 8 days old. I've pretty much brooded him the same way I brood my chickens. I have a baby pool in my "chicken room". I keep the heat around 75 in the chicken room but I keep an area in the baby pool around 90 degrees (just lowered it to 85 since Daryl is now a week old. I call the 90 degree area Daryl's house and he sleeps there. I'll post pictures a little later...It's been working out well. As far as what I'm going to do with Daryl when he's too big for inside but not ready for pasture yet...I haven't figured it out yet.

Unfortunately, the other egg did not develop. I cracked it open, cooked it and fed it to the chickens. I know it was in the incubator for 54 days but the chickens didn't mind.

Im sorry! Daryl is going to be a pet for sure! Are you planning on incubating emu eggs again? I want to i just dont know how difficult it really is in comparison to hatching chicken eggs, I know it takes ALOT longer for them to hatch but is that all? Everything eles pretty much the same?
