Sometimes not so distant if you called back. They'd come up in the trees where you could see them.

Crickets and peepers while sitting on the porch at night. Hot-air balloons hitting their burner while going over our house at sunset. Screech-owls calling from the treeline. My cat, purring softly in my ear while I tried to sleep for five more minutes before I had to get up for school. My grandmother, calling for us to get out of her apple tree or stop eating her young rhubarb stalks. All good...
