Hello everyone!

My hens started laying this week and it is very exciting! But with the excitment comes the curiosity of knowing which eggs belongs to which hens.
Here's some photos of my hens with some photos of their eggs.

The blue eggs I know for sure belongs to my Ameraucana!

Looks like you'll have a lovely colorful egg basket!

lol, I'm glad I'm not the only one that cares to know which hen laid which egg. I can match an egg to the hen at a glance now but each time I have new layers it's a bit of a guessing game for a month or two (especially when they don't lay the color you expect!)

Marans will occasionally lay both solid dark brown eggs and then spotted eggs. They aren't always consistent so keep that in mind. Slight shade variations from the same hen is normal but I don't think any of mine have as big of a shade variation as the Marans.

When you're intrigued by such things, and it sounds like you are, then it kind of just happens over time. You'll be able to narrow it down by which breeds lay which colors initially and then you'll start catching them in the act of laying occasionally. When I would hear a hen singing her egg song I would go out and get the egg. After they have been laying for a few weeks the eggs become more consistently shaped, each hen will have something telling about their particular egg, color, shape, size, some are rounder, pointy, small, large, sometimes even a consistent bump, but occasionally I just have a couple hens that have nearly identical eggs and I just know it's down to a couple.

Other than curiosities sake, I've actually found this to come in handy. I know if I find something odd with an egg, such as pale yolks, or not laying entirely, I'll know which hen to check on.
