I went to visit my flock for the 10th time this morning with some chicken crack (cat food). A HUGE bird flew from the back I knew that isn't good. I got closer and found one of my Cuckoo Marans laying there dead. DANG IT!! I bought 3 hens and a rooster in spring as I've never had dark egg layers before so I thought it would be a nice addition. Lost one when it was younger (just disappeared). So now I only have one hen and roo. They have not started laying yet (they are 25 weeks) unless they are doing it in the woods which could be. They fly over the fence and are out every morning. Anyway..... I decided to open her up to see if there was an egg or not. I found her egg sack (not sure of the scientific name) - I think. One was growing... so my question...
Does anyone know if it looks like she was laying? How long does it take that yolk to "grow" to be usable?
