Have you thought of creating raised gardens and running pens on those? Make so soil is a sandy loam so it does not wick moisture up. When resting ground you can do a little gardening.

Missouri is drier if you still have sites on it.

It's not that big of a deal. I'ma still be in the loop and be breeding in the spring. I'm just not keeping any. They come I mate them. The rooster goes and the hen goes with her chicks when they hatch. I don't feel like messing with them during the off season. Muddy slop is alosing battle and building up is too expensive for a few chickens
