I don't think wild vegetation is adequate shade man, there's always heat that you have to account for.Just pens over gravel. About 15 pens straddle edge of graveled drive. I left vegetation un-cut to provide shade on south side of pens.

Idk man maybe I pamper my birds too much lolThe shade provided by the vegetation keeps a strip of ground the birds can move to while contacting intact vegetation cover on the ground. The have overhead shade provided by inorganic materials like tin sheets and shade cloth. They can use both plus access sun when they want.
Feel temperate of soil that is bare and compare it to that which is vegetation covered right next to it.
