Southern California Quail Ranchers

From the desk located somewhere on the Crazy H-Bar Ranch;
I just put my last misc set of quail eggs in the incubator yesterday, Monday morning is the start of my first ever breeding program, one that I'm actually logging down on paper and keeping tract of who lays what. So, first thing Monday morning I will collect whatever eggs are there, so I will have about 5 days of 70 or so eggs available that I won't be setting.

From the Crazy H-Bar Ranch;
Now that the quail projects have started we have about 80 fertile quails that need to be gone. After Wednesday or Thursday they will be at least 8 days old... I would like to see someone hatch these out...

Looking forward to attending. I'll be bringing mealworms,no crow collars, misc chicken themed sewn items (kitchen totes etc.), dog tennis ball launchers (small size). I'm looking for quail eggs

Here are a few pictures of our breeder pens. Our neighbor who hatched our first quail for us, built this for us also and it has been an invaluable tool in our Quail raising adventures. We house our quail in our Garage and because of the lack of natural light we have LCD lights on for them 16 hours a day. The quad-plex stands tall enough that there is room for some storage below. Hint the quail are little piggies so no open containers or boxes unless you want the filled with food and other quail by products. Most of that moved out from under there when the quail moved in The interior of a breeding pen/apartment in the quad-plex. It is approximately 2x2. We use poultry nipples attached to a hanging bottles for water and a standard seed cups for feed. I am trying to come up with a better feeding system since Quail love to play in their food and tend to create more wasted food than I prefer. Also note the wire adjoining wall. This open view to the next door apartment make for ease when rotating males for greater genetic influence and diversity. They are not seen as a threat or interloper to their "new girls". The quad-plex cropped in for a closer view. There are pull out waste trays. We are currently running our breeder pens at a 1:5 Male to female ratio. It seems to be going well. A view of the floor slant and egg tray. This egg collection system is amazingly easy. Eggs just roll out into the tray. I am thankful our neighbor had the know how and experience to build this set up for us as it has made our experience quail raising much easier.
How big is the opening between the door and egg drop. Don't the quail squeeze out?

Suzie Cupp is making up some amazing name tags for the meet up. If you would a name tag(s), please let her know what you would like it to say. These badges will come in a plastic holder so we can use them for future meet ups. I think $1 each should cover the cost for the supplies to make these up. Of course donations are also welcome. I will be wearing mine!!! But it won't say Suzie!!!!

Just about 4 weeks left until the event. Many people should have a good idea of what they will be bringing or what they may be looking for. Please keep your posts updated as your situations change, so I can share them on other sites. For those who have items or themed baskets for the Raffle please PM me so I can make a list and seek out other donations from local companies. I can't wait to see old friends again and to meet new friends. CCP/BYC people are some of the best (and craziest) people to know. Last year we had close to 475 people show up, let's see if we can get 500!!! If you would like to purchase a personalized collectible name tag, please PM, they are $1 each. They come in a plastic badge holder to pin on or hang around the neck.

Update from the Crazy H-Bar Ranch and Hatchery;
We just put the last of the mixed quail eggs into lock down so in a couple days we will have babies available, I will update what color patterns we get from them. As you can see the turner is full and ready to go in... Now we have overstock of eggs from the breeding projects that need to be taken soon. They are at 1 week right now, so if you want to hatch em or eat em... they are available!!!

Wow, it's hard to believe the first meet up of the year is only 3 weeks away. Time sure flies when you're shoveling poo... Anywho, I thought it might be a good time to start a final list of whatcha got to sell, whatcha looking for, whatcha need or don't want. Please remember, if you have made arrangements with someone for your stuff, please update your post so we can clean out unneeded posts. In addition, those of you who are bringing stuff for the raffle, please PM me. I think someone is also doing a silent auction, so if you would like to silent auction something you may do so...and I guess we can't talk about... I look forward to seeing what you people are bringing and I hope those of you who are looking, can find it here. Hope to see everyone on March 28th, remember to invite your friends, I want to see 1500 people there...

If you're on FB there is the main list in the event thread.. I will do my best to share the BYC list with the FB list and vice versa (whatever that is)
