I got these two supposedly Speckled Sussex chicks. However, someone called the species into question due to the lack of speckling in the body. Do they look like Speckled Sussex? Can you tell if they are roos or pullets? Any insight is appreciated!

Maybe... I asked this same question about my SS genders here a while back. The combs on SS seem to get big early, but both of mine turned out to be girls. I'm not good at the gender guessing on some breeds though.

I have to agree that they look like a really cool SS mix with something else... partridge maybe? I have only seen SS that have whole bodies that look like your babies' neck speckles. They're really pretty though.

Here are mine that hatched on 3/4.

Interesting! Their personalities are not what I expected. I was expecting friendly inquisitive birds. These two are a bit aloof, stick to themselves away from the other birds (all brought home together), and are pretty skittish.

My Speckled Sussex also sticks to herself a little, and I can often find her foraging about 10 feet away from the others. However, she is good at anticipating what you want, and when you are going to pick her up she always squats down. She isn't the best flyer, and though she *can* jump up into the chicken hutch (5 feet, maybe?) she usually prefers for me to pick her up and put her in.

That's interesting... Mine are very inquisitive, sometimes timid, but like to come in close to be petted and have treats. Did you get them from a breeder/local farm source?
