The American Cemani Breeders Club...open forum

Here are my 6 Cemanis at 3 weeks old. I have decided to change “Purple” from a female to a male. As mentioned earlier I was still undecided with him. There are two reasons; the comb has increased in size & his legs/feet are as large as “Alejandro’s” (Green). Much more mass than any of the others.

I also had to adjust the exposure on each photograph. The chicks are so dark it would be difficult to make out details w/o this adjustment. The last photograph is of Alejandro w/o exposure adjustments to give you an idea just how dark they really are.

BTW; it was a chore getting them to pose for the camara. Everyone except Alejandro. He is an absolute ham. :)

Absolutely beautiful Pyxis! I can look at these gorgeous birds all day long. Please keep us posted.

To say I have the bug would be a huge understatement.

Guessing Cemani sex at a young age cont’d;

I need to make a major correction on dating the 6 Cemanis. They were born April 7 which makes them 3 weeks old today.

Although it is becoming more & more difficult to guess sex they all remain the same for now. Green & purple- male, & all others female. I find that referring to online adult photos is very helpful in that even though the male comb is substantial, some female combs are equally impressive. With that said, it casts some doubt on Cemanis “Blue” & “Yellow” although I am pretty confident both will remain female.

I have already begun transitioning them from indoor brooder to their outdoor pen. They are packed full of energy. It is enjoyable to watch them spar with one another & flap their wings at full throttle while running end to end the length of their pen.

I hatched my first 8 on Friday. I havent taken a peek inside the mouths yet, but besides a couple with a white toenail they look pretty good. Love them! The middle pic is “lucky star” she/he was the last one to hatch and got stuck in the first quarter of a downward zip, I managed to get her most of the way done until she wad able to push the rest of the way into my hand. So amazing

Snapped some quick pictures of some of the older growout cockerels. The camera has such a hard time with their blackness. I'll need to break out my DSLR to get some good pictures instead of using my phone.

This guy below is the St. Patrick's Day cockerel that I don't know if I'll keep or not.

Great pix & beautiful cockerels Pyxis. Thanks for sharing. Your pix makes me think I have more cocerels than first thought. Are yours about 5 weeks old?

Thanks! Six weeks today actually for the St. Patrick's Day cockerel :) The other is about a week younger, so right around five weeks and a couple days.
