The chicken medicine cabinet. Help create a helpful thread!

what about pine-tar? I plan on getting some of that for my cabinet. I have heard it does wonders for feather picking/wounds.

I can vouch for this wound treatment! Had 2 young Faverole hens that got picked on by my older hens. One had a quite large wound on her lower back. I applied Pine Tar,another name is Hoof dressing. It has a built in antiseptic. The tar itself is sticky so it discourages the other chickens from picking. It does work well.It healed a rather large wound, and she's starting to grow feathers again.

It's an old remedy, but it does work!

Here's an herbal approach we used: cayenne pepper, can be mixed with garlic powder, an antibiotic. The cayenne pepper stops bleeding from a wound and helps prevent shock. (fox attack)

Following the advise of Dr. Fred Jeffery in his book on Poultry Diseases my medicine cabinet consists of the following:

A Coccidiostat

Louse Powder

A hatchet

That's all.

Natural Wormers

Ground raw hulled Pumpkin Seeds are a good natural wormer. There is a coating on the seed that paralyzes the worm and then the worm can be expelled by the digestive action of the gut. It is good to feed something that will cause the animal to have a slight diaherea (flush) like molasses or skim milk about an hour or two after the seeds have been eaten.

Carrots, if the cell stucture of the carrot is broken down like in a juicer will do, also help get rid of worms.

Diatomaceous Earth that is food grade can be added to the feed for the animals. Diatomaceous Earth is made up of very sharp particles so small we can not see them. It cuts the worms and other insects to shreds, but does not harm the body or intestinal tract of the animal or person. You would not have to use a flush like you do with the pumkin seeds and carrots.

Making the gut unsuitable to the worms also keeps them in check. Real Apple Cider Vinegar at a rate of 1 tablespoon per gallon of water is a natural remedy to help ward of worms.

I feed my chickens Apple Cider Vinegar every day. I did the Pumkin seeds and will continue to do so every few months to keep the birds free of worms.
