The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

Oh-h-h, thanks for the tip-
I see where the problem is, 3 of the chicks are "much more" outgoing than the silver is.
I'll keep your info tucked away for later tho.

Thank-you so much!

Nice . That's exactly how I spent my day yesterday.

These are so pretty, @PeakyBeaky.
I'm wondering, will mine change their looks drastically after their last juvenile molt? They're from Meyer, so of course they're not going to look like your beauties, but right now they hardly resemble SLW at all. I've never had young chickens so I don't know what to expect as they feather out.

Nice looking SL PeakyBeaky. I need to take a few pictures of my grow outs. They are turning out pretty good and I hope I have a few to take to Ohio Nationals.

Most chicks do not start developing lacing until they are about 6weeks old. It starts as white lines in some lines, and than the chest develops white scallops.
Chicks molt about 7 times before they reach 16 weeks. Most hatchery birds are not really Silver Laced Wyandottes..they represent the breed. Most hatchery birds are wonderful and will be good layers.

Is this what you mean by a buff laced Wyandotte?

It looks like a splash BLRW with poor mahogany, or a splash GLW. I have a BLRW rooster that is similar in color, although his lacing isn't quite as white. But he has the gold hackles and darker colored wings, which are actually a negative in a BLRW.

This is a lacing picture of one of my BLRW hens who also isn't as dark as desired.

I'm not sure if there is a specific genetics code for the buff in a buff laced Wyandotte, but you could get something very similar in 2 generations by breeding a SLW to a splash BLRW. Select for birds with blue lacing and either silver or yellow/gold colors, then breed those to each other, or to another splash BLRW. Blue x Blue (lacing) will give 25% splash, 50% blue and 25% black lacing. Blue x Splash will give 50% splash and 50% blue. You'd want to use the SLW or GLW to remove the mahogany from the BLRW, to get it more of a buff color.

This site has some good information regarding the various Wyandotte colors and what can happen with the breedings.

Yes that's it

These bird suck. So skiddish and unfriendly. We are butchering ours and keeping our RIR broilers.
