The Silver Laced Wyandotte Thread

My two SLW's, hatched June 1, 2015, are the only two hens laying for me this February. They lay one egg every 36 hours, so I get 1-2 eggs from the everyday. My 5 EE hens, 3yo this year, have laid 3 eggs since mid-December. One of my SLW's is markedly larger than the other SLW and her eggs are becoming jumbo sized.
These hens were given to me by somebody breaking the law keeping chickens in her town that didn't allow it. I don't think I would have even known about this breed if this hadn't happened. I will definitely be including SLW's in my flocks in the future.
Btw, I kept 5 Dark Cornish roosters that I had bought as chicks, hatched September 1, 2015, and I butchered all of the other roosters.. I will be incubating eggs fertilized by them, as well as laid by my EE hens. The chicks will look like I-have-no-idea-what! Even more, I have NO idea what they will look feathered out! Breeding mutts.
Guess I'll have to take some pictures.

I am so happy to see these girls and boys! I thought that my silver laced wyandotte had a malformed comb, but I guess they have a rose comb. I was not going to allow her to have chicks, although she is an excellent layer. Thanks for this post.

Do you have a SLW roo too ? For pure babies ? I would LOVE to have some of these, they are gorgeous.

It was my plan.

Well, not trying to be rude or anything, but if you are looking to start a breeding program, it would make more sense to breed quality birds than hatchery ones. Especially if you are looking to sell chicks or hatching eggs down the road, people will appreciate better quality. If they wanted hatchery birds, they would just order from the hatchery after all. I recommend looking into some quality breeders, it will cost you a bit more but will be well worth it. Here are some places you should try out:

You will be much happier with Standard Bred SLW if you can get a hold of some. You can hatch and sell hatchery SLW but they look like Silver Laced Sexlinks. I have both and I can't tell you how big the difference is. My hatchery birds didn't even fit the type description of a Wyandotte from the APA Standard book. But if you just want a laced bird that lays a lot of eggs there is nothing wrong with that either.
