They've adjusted the permitting process a bit. used to be a waitlist, now there are weighted lotteries for permits for both commercial and noncommercial rafting permits. The commercial permits are like what you see above. Tour companies get drawn and then they sell the seats on their permit to tourists.

For the noncommercial ones, you enter and based on a number of criteria (including a hard requirement that at least one person MUST have skills and experience as determined by the national park service), you get a weighted spot in the lottery.

I've done the San Juan river in Utah, and it's a blast. I'd like to do the canyon some day too, but the last time I had the opportunity we didn't get drawn. If you can do it, 100000% do it. Experience of a lifetime.

I'm not sure I want to be on the Colorado in the bottom of the canyon during the monsoon season....that looks fun though.

One of the safest places you can be. Lightining will hit on the rim and the odds of a flash flood event impacting the main flow are minimal. The photography would be epic. Not to mention that on a guided tour, they have safety protocols in place for severe weather.

You aren't the least bit comforting...safety protocols...my Aunt Fanny.
I camp in the monsoon, I've almost been hit by lightning a few times. It's terrors are highly exaggerated.
