Water Heaters!!!! Are they really worth it??

Bucket, nipples and an aquarium heater. Clean water using no more electricity than a light bulb. No worry about electric shorts or water in the bedding. I use a 2.5 gallon bucket. I find that when the chickens do not have to dip their beaks in water, I have a lot less frostbite problems.

Well I would LOVE to use those rubber bowls-- they sound marvelous, but the problem is my hens aren't in sunlight-- during the winter (and this summer too. :p) they were in a shed... they don't have a run since the shed they have is so big... I also found these today: http://www.amazon.com/Kitty-Tube-Voltage-Outdoor-Electric/dp/B00ATWNIS0/ref=pd_sim_petsupplies_4 Yes, no, or maybe??? I ALSO found these dog bowls, but will the raised sides make it hard for my pullets to drink out of? Here they are: http://cozywinters.com/shop/kh-2010-2020.html I thought that they were a reasonable price... I would like to use something like this: http://www.midlandhardware.com/145486.html#.UjtyctI3tYd but I can't find where it says if it's ok for plastic waterers??? But I certainly don't want my shed burning down cause of that.... Thanks for all your inputs guys!!

I think $20 for the heated dog bowl sounds better than $50.

It does not state how high the sides are on the heated dog bowl. But I am going to guess and say grown chickens won't have a problem drinking out of the bowl.

It states it is good to -20 degrees. Does it get colder than that where you are?

Just be careful that you don't have any chicks around heated dog bowls, because they can drown. Otherwise they are good so long as the chickens don't dip their wattles in it.

Ok! I don't have any of those little ones running around-- that was back in the spring. The youngest we have is *almost* six months... Hmm.. What's wrong if they dip their wattles in-- sometimes my hens Snap might skim the water with them, and some water usually runs down their neck if they're particularly thirsty... Soooo..... no-no with the kitty pad?

Dipping their wattles or getting water on themselves is a problem in freezing weather. They can't just dry themselves off like you can if you get your fingers or hair wet. It sets them up to get frostbite easier. Also any extra moisture in the bedding or the air can add to cold feet and respiratory problems.

Oh, ok. Thank you for clearing that up. :)
