What causes feathers to look like this?

What would cause feathers to look like this? My new ducks came in and their feathers are pretty beat up. Does nature just need to run its course and molt out or is there something that can be done to help them grow out faster?

It is either time for molt or a drake has shredded them climbing on to mate.

As @Jenbirdee has said many times to others that have duck wings looking like this extra protein can help feathers to grow out pristine. Some use Mealworms, dry cat food, dry dog food. I use dry dog food and mealworms Be sure if you use cat or dog food make sure it's small kibble so it's easy to swallow.
